I have to laugh at this, because on here I see a lot of people talking about family and meaningful relationships. As the father of two young, insanely challenging boys, a lot of the stuff on this list is non-existent and hasn't existed since the birth of the first 7 years ago. Time - Nope Health - Nope, stress, no time, bad eating, no sleep A quiet mind - Nope Slow mornings - Nope Ability to travel - Nope Rest withou…

I'm in similar boat as you but for me, a lot of these are yes. Some went "Nope" for a short while but slowly getting back to yes. That's why they are real luxuries...

How?! Are you children a lot older now?

Health is obviously first, you have nothing without it. But real joy is wanting to do something, something that is important to you, and being able to. Without desire there is no joy... just a slow countdown.

Kinda depressing cus that thing used to be coding (or mastery of), which seems to be dying/being replaced by gen ai.

Painting, playing the guitar, and pottery making are likely not going to pay your bills either, but no one can stop you having fun doing any of it.

In general you get paid for doing stuff that no one one would do without pay, because it isn't fun. So work is less about having fun and more about what kind of suck you tend to be capable of sucking up.

Time, quiet mind, slow mornings, rest without guilt, calm and boring days - are all the same thing - escape from being busy. This assumes being busy is common, which is actually not that common for an age of 60+. The real luxury, for any age, in general, is in not having dependencies and needs. The need to impress someone, the need to know every ugly news from around globe, the need to read everything and be knowledg…

IANAP but any philosophy based on absence is a nihilism

Not really. It is just a combination of great parenting team, money, and a happy healthy baby. While I'm sure a lot of that is luck (about baby), I am sure mother/baby eating obsessively healthy stuff is a big part of it. People give formula, cake candy choco, suger food, carb etc to babies...and they wonder why they act crazy.

You probably wouldn't, just like you wouldn't drive your car to visit your next door neighbor.

I wouldn't use public transport to visit my next door neighbor.

Right. Did you think I was suggesting you would? I was trying to use an analogy to illustrate that different modes of transportation are complementary. You don't need a bus for a 10 minute bike trip.
