They should really put the video/gif from their repo README on the website somewhere. I clicked around for a while trying to see what it looked like and finally found it on Github.

And yes, a proper homepage should have this, too. It’s just that the link in the OP isn’t the proper homepage for LazyGit.
Haven't seen this in a while and had a look at the lazygit repository on GitHub and the README is just quite literally unreadable since I last looked at it. The README is now full of ads, lots of nonsense on the page just to reach the text and on top of that, it is now written by Claude. So right now Lazygit has become by definition slop. Wow, you are right. I checked the repository out for myself and it has like two or three screens just of ads and sponsor plugs before any content. I don't know about anybody else, but IMO it's far superior to ask for donations after delivering value rather than before. That way maybe someone who likes the content can donate once satisfied, rather than deciding "no" in advance.

As someone who has done OSS work maintaining a project of similar size, and who works with people maintaining projects 10x larger, IMO this is totally fine. Maintainers deserve to get the bag. 99.999% of users won't pay for it, even if their company's product depends on it or if every dev in the company uses it. At the end of the day the people making the product have to get paid somehow, and if people don't want to…
