That's a lie. 9€ is not the max you pay, it's metered and extra traffic costs extra. So what you said about others can just as well apply here. What I see is some homemade service that costs $125/year and has little to show for it. There's nothing about what it offers on the website, the homepage has a handful of words. It claims "CDN" but doesn't say anything about what the exit points are. All I see is two "datacen…

From the pricing FAQ[0]: > Can I set a spending limit for overages? > Yes. Please contact support in order to set up your spending limit. None of the others support spending limits last I checked. I can kind of see it, but hetzner costs, what, 5€/m for your own server with 10TB traffic included? How is a 4€/m markup remotely justified for what amounts to setting up an apache server and pointing a domain at it? And cutting traffic to a twentieth?

If motor oil for your car costs 20€, what justifies spending 40€ to have a shop change the oil for you?

I would be in the market for Europe-based static hosting and am glad that more European services are popping up, but this has one massive drawback: Unpredictable cost (unless you manually set a limit with support, then it presumably changes into unpredictable availability). With everyone moaning about AI crawlers I have no idea how far 10 or 500 GB bandwidth go nowadays, and I don't want to need to know. At all-inkl.…

I don't like the "proudly made in USA" type marketing. It should not matter if the service is good.

I think local-first is a good heuristic in that it would avoid needless pushing of goods around the globe (or needless round-trips of lots of data around the globe).

Also, some people might like it if a product or service was made in US, Switzerland, Germany, Italy etc... for purely personal reasons (feelings).

It's the internet. We used to be proud that it's global. It used to be super cool to talk to people from other side of planet in real time.

Why should it be? In my experience it depends on the case, and in my case it seems like an absolute technological overkill to version the site and have statichost regularly pull from some repository, as I update it perhaps once a year.

I mean, versioning is basically free from a technical / storage / time spent standpoint, and my experience says that if you don’t do it you likely will lose your code at some point

I use Git for version control, but not for deployment because I don’t want to bother making a commit every time I want to fix a typo.

There is something special about the combination of people posting something thinking it's some gotcha, then they completely misunderstood both what the thing is, and what they're trying to point out, hilarious.

Enlighten everyone, me included, please?

EU is not the same thing as Europe. Europe is a continent, EU a political and economic union.

Similar to the USA not being same as America.

Ok, point being? Codeberg is a non-profit community that evolves and figures out where to move, all the time, this is the point of the association itself. Members discuss what to do, then a decision is made, then new rules eventually apply, this is how the project moves forward.

You said people were “riding the line”. They weren’t. Codeberg made up a rule that excluded eligibility for projects they were already hosting. Projects that were not illegal, indecent or dangerous. I can’t think of another time something like that has happened. They can do it, sure, but many had hoped they could be an independent host for all FOSS as GitHub deteriorates. They have disappointed those hopes, and we wi…

GitHub is deteriorating primarily because of LLMs. I’m guessing Codeberg doesn’t want to end up the same way.

> , I wouldn't trust them to host any of my stuff, especially considering that you always have to hope they don't change their rules any further. Yeah, I think this is a win-win for both parties. You strike me as someone who would "ride along the lines of the terms of service" basically, and you'll see anything not explicitly forbidden as being allowed essentially. While Codeberg is a project driven by humans, with h…

> "ride along the terms of service" By using AI to write code, like virtually everyone does? Tell me, what indication was there in their TOS, that this might be close to a line?

Not one programmer i know does this. Well no actually, one does because his boss makes him but it's so shitty he basically AI-washes his own job. How come on HN every week i come across someone who believes programming is dead and everyone has been brainwashed by Silicon Valley execs into destroying the planet with LLMs?

Do X in whatever way you want, if you do so knowing it's against the terms of service, you're "riding along the line of the terms of service" for sure if you try to explain away how it is/isn't explicitly forbidden.

Using AI was not against any terms of service at all three months ago.

No, it was just against every value Codeberg ever stood for, and against the value humanity should stand for. There was no ambiguity ever about this. There is no moral ambiguity that if people develop military FLOSS on codeberg they will be banned, even though it's not in the ToS right now, because that's the right thing to do and the community will reach a consensus that we want to support human communities, not military organisations who destroy them.
