If you’re inclined to wear a tinfoil hat: Germany had a really hard time repatriating their own gold (hmm) from the US, with the Americans reportedly putting every possible obstacle in their way to slow them down.

Even inspecting the gold to see it was there was apparently too much: https://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/german-politici... with inspections first being refused, then being allowed only to see the entrance to the safe, then only allowed to see one of nine rooms containing the gold, and to look at a small few, but not all gold bars.

I’m sure there’s a perfectly innocent explanation.

Earlier quoted context omitted.

I think it's an oblique threat. Just recently Trump made a direct threat on the bond markets. https://www.mediaite.com/media/tv/trump-suggests-he-can-use-...

How would that even work? Park tanks on Wall Street and point them at stockbrokers?

His chain of thought has a length not beyond his nose. It's typical for dementia, and I have to see it all the time with my parent. Only the very last sentence is kept in mind, all other context is mostly gone.

I wish a reporter would ask him what question he heard and answered, because I'm sure he would be unable to correctly answer.

It's honestly quite impressive that it took them this long to do this.

Italy is the third country with the largest gold reserves since the 50s or so, and most of their gold is in the US. The idea of repatriating it comes up from time to time, but the truth is that it's s logistical and diplomatic trouble with little positive outcomes.

The truth is that the current government is part of the international right-wing info-complex, and desperate to buddy up with Trump, so they are fundamentally unwilling to burn political capital for such a move. If they lose the next round of elections in April 2027 and Trump is not reigned in by then, the issue will probably come up again.

The American Service-Members' Protection Act of 2002, also known as the "Hague Invasion Act", gives the President of the U.S. legal authority to invade the Netherlands to free detained U.S. service members imprisoned by the International Criminal Court. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Service-Members%27_Pr...

So America thinks its above the ICC then? Explains a lot, lmao.

Yes? Nation-states like the US (and China) are more powerful than any international organization and power dictates what happens in international relations.

I’m not saying it’s right, I’m just saying it is what it is.

86 tonnes worth of gold is about $12.25 billion, or approximately what Nvidia paid for HuggingFace.

Nvidia is worth many times more than the central-bank holdings of a number of sovereign countries. It's a staggering comparison.

You can also ask why they move it to London and not mainland Europe.

It's easier to sell gold in the UK because of certain laws they have.

Why did you modify the title to not include Canada? According to the HN guidelines: "Otherwise please use the original title, unless it is misleading or linkbait; don't editorialize."

10 characters had to be removed to fit under the title length limit. “and Canada” was the only real option that maintained coherence. There were no editorial motives behind that selection.
