I'm more of a firefox person, but does this impact other chromium based browsers that have retained MV2? Eg, is there another repo for extensions beyond the chrome web store?

I'm wondering because my wife has a subscription to speechify (commercial text to speech app), and uses it to listen to online textbooks. It has recently pretty much stopped working properly (auto-reads headers, but not the main text of the book). I thought it might be due to MV3 and the extension no longer being able to parse the page properly.

I was about to try the chrome variants that haven't gone to MV2, but I guess this removal of MV2 exensions would mean that all MV2 browsers are now crippled..

I've been loading OpenWRT onto meraki MX64s and installing Adblock home + tailscale. I have them report in to my Home assistant instance for firmware updates & can access the router ui over tailscale for admin. I've done this for my mom, my in-laws, and my brother.

At this point, breaking them up into smaller companies. Then start fining the individual companies so the balance sheets feel the fine more. Increase the fines exponentially for each violation.

The other option is jailing those who direct companies to break laws. It works for criminal organizations, why doesn't it work for companies?

If anyone will be going to jail within a corp, it's usually some low-level scapegoat and rarely the C-suite.

I'm with you. I've been riding with Safari for almost 20 years now. It's been nothing but great for me. I cannot think of a time I have used a website that did not function properly in Safari. Nice. I thought that was just me! Same with ads on YouTube.

One thing you may be surprised with, not sure if this helps or harms you lol, is you can develop some decent safari plugins for personal use with todays AI tools. I made a little popout extension for giving me a more minimal viewer experience with a button in safari with a few days of work (still maintain and update it occasionally, getpoppy.io if you're curious - and the vibe code tools also used webkit in the browser engine of its Mac app)

Evidently whenever money and safety are opposed, money wins every time. Ad blocking is existential for Google. If everyone blocks ads, Google stops existing. They will do everything they can to prevent it, without going so far they stop existing for regulatory reasons either.

I'm looking forward to an AI product that filters all consumed Internet content to remove ads. Now _that_ would be a killer feature.

Why do we need to throw AI at everything? It's a huge waste of resources for a problem that is/was easily solved by uBlock Lite (and other alternatives).

That's exactly what I would think if I were in trouble and hadn't done any research, but in fact it is not. When I needed a locksmith a few years ago, at night, it cost $70.

Probably depends highly on location, company and type of lock. I needed to get into my mailbox after losing the keys. They wanted 150 for literally 5 minutes with a screwdriver (lesson learned!). Of course I'm paying for those years of experience as well as the drive over. I was able to talk them down to 120. Oh and it was during the weekday! I also did research prior and called a few places, they all basically said the same thing: "depends on the lock but probably minimum 100".

Without wanting to sound rude: you're talking about browsers – serious business. Most hackers – I feel – need a bit more than 'I strongly suggest it' to even consider switching to a nascent browser :D

it’s a firefox fork. ‘most hackers’ would research it no matter what was typed on a msg board prior to installing. the first step is knowingg about it. personally, im a big fan and daily drive it on my personal systems. but I do find their tab groups implementations to be a bit subpar.

The media just have to report the removal of ad blocking as a security/safety issue. If users are made aware that what Chromium is doing, they can make a better decision, but it has to be called out in every post about Chromium (preferably mentioning a few safer choices), otherwise it will disappear in the noise.
