I'm not contesting the need to be compensated for work. My point is that there's stuff that I have worked on to scratch an itch and don't feel the need for monetary compensation. I believe there's an intrinsic need to be part of something bigger than ones self, and participating by volunteering time to have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped make something you care about better is not a bad thing, if on your…

I'm working on something I plan to give away for free as well. I'm backporting request multiplexing into HTTP/1, calling it HTTP/1.2, and working on updates to a few HTTP servers that rejected HTTP/2 and HTTP/3. I wrote my RFC draft first to really hammer out the edge cases before I go in blind on the implementation. I just finished the RFC draft 2 days ago and it took 9 pages, but the code changes in my estimation w…

What you're doing almost requires giving it away as it only has value if other people use it.

One small nit: "group identity". I have no tribe, no group (alas). The only tribe I can lay claim to is humanity itself.

I'm at a point in my life where one tends to ponder the value of one's actions in the scant time left to act. I try to acknowledge the nihilism that whatever I do will be forgotten in short order, but while I'm here I may have the opportunity to somehow "make the world a better place". Life's funny that way.

I wish you luck with your project and thank you for engaging in depth with me.

In ~2017 I ditched FreeNAS when my FreeNAS Mini died from the Atom C2000 hardware failure. iXSystems was great about getting me a replacement board, but I decided when I rebuilt the system to just use FreeBSD and get used to command-line only administration. That directly lead to me learning pf, jails, bhyve, etc. Yeah, I don't have any fancy web UI, but I've had a rock solid system for almost 10 years with Samba + N…

As a sysadmin that has got a fleet of ~500 other servers to manage, I don't have the time nor do I care about all the command line switches that are under the hood . I want to install the system, check the checkboxes for the features the company needs and then pay iXsystems a few thousand dollars to think about all the underlying compatability and configurations and security features for me. That's the whole point of…

That's the difference of a fleet admin and of a localhost.

Amusingly, this it what got Windows work in the enterprise and what Linux-based distributions never made it right.

Make no mistake, I'm giving away HTTP/1.2 for free because I don't think there's any money to be made off of it. It's a simpler and more elegant alternative to HTTP/2 most of the time, but that does not translate into dollars like being able to use SQL semantics on a small flat file.

If you want to make the world a better place, just be a friend to people. Just being someone you would consider a good friend adds incalculable value to the world, especially in world now full of people single-mindedly farming for attention on social media. Application protocols become obsolete, but people remember how you treated them, and it influences how they treat people in a never-ending chain... At least that's my $0.02.

It was good talking to you, take care man!

Did they release their code under the GPL? FreeBSD is not GPL licensed, its 2 clause BSD licensed, so this wouldn't apply to that portion.

TrueNAS SCALE is not BSD based. It's Linux, specifically, Debian.

TrueNAS Scale is Linux based, but Core is FreeBSD based, and is the product they made for storage purposes before they made scale.

First off, in some sense everything is political. Next, I am not claiming that you can't be supporter of open source while also holding a wide array of associated political views. My point is that the concept of open source fundamentally rejects the ideal capitalist conception of the world as a bunch of purely rational self-interested agents seeking to optimize wealth and economic output. Willingly performing labor f…

"First off, in some sense everything is political." That's what every partisan hack says before they shove their culture war politics down your throat. Some people out in the real world get laid and just can't be bothered to hear your opinion about the race-swapped Snow White remake, regardless of whether you loved it or hated it.

Politics is a lense of analysis that can be applied to almost anything related to the group behaviors of people. Refusing to engage with it because there are charlatans that apply these methods poorly just demonstrates an inability or lack of desire to understand. It's quite revealing btw that you decided to frame intellectual pursuits and sexual behavior as being in opposition and/or claim that the later is somehow more important.

No longer SCALE.

It became TrueNAS Community Edition a few months ago (last year, maybe).
