That's not a joke. You simply don't joke about "shooting students" with gun emoji. Not in this climate. I support any system that takes threats seriously, even "joking threats" to strangers in personal chats. Jokes have a tendency to escalate. Basically my experience in 2026 on Facebook and other major social media: there are no jokes. You don't do satire on your personal account; you don't deadpan jokes about violen…

> No educator in her right mind fantasizes, or jokes, or muses about shooting anyone, let alone their precious students

I don’t disagree regarding the tastelessness of such “jokes”, but at the same time this is just a step or two away from Thought Crime territory, which is very disturbing.

100% >Your Snapchat DMs feel like a locked apartment — but the building management reportedly kept a spare key.

There must be people who talk like that. There must be people who think like that. There must be people who will find nothing disturbing if read or hear such a sentence.

It's all the 1900s 'proper English' that's in the training material. There are indeed people who talk like that.

There could be a Flock-like or Ring-like or some other device listening in on that face to face. And the phone running Signal or whatever might already be compromised by something Pegasus-like and sending whatever happens on it off to who knows where. That's the kind of world we now live in.

yes, and whichever god you believe in might be listening in and come down to personally smite you! but there is significantly different chances of those events happening. there is a 100% chance snapchat reads all of your messages. a random student teacher being infected by pegasus-like spyware is ~= 0% chance. a flock camera in my living room is 0% chance.

To be fair, this is a school grounds and we've regularly passed rulings that basically amount to "students do not have rights". Even if all Flock cameras are taken down, and with the environment of US schools: I can see a situation where such cameras are justified and enforced around school campuses (rather than addressing the systemic issues underneath).

So I'd boost studen-teacher to 20%

Yes, it is several steps away from thoughts. When you think a thought, you are keeping it to yourself, and FBI doesn't show up to have a chat. Whisper your thoughts to a priest, and seek forgiveness. Don't type your thoughts on a keyboard unless you really mean them!

When you write down your thoughts, and send them across a global network, in writing, to other people who can read them, they become more than thoughts. They become speech, and rather non-repudiable at that. Perhaps if an educator is having thoughts about doing harm and violence in a specific way to specific people, they could keep that to themselves and not share it, in writing, with others.

"Thought Crime territory" is just bullshit scare-mongering, when you have people deliberately writing down specific threats, and sending them out over the airwaves. People who are placed in positions of responsibility and authority. People who are supposed to care for minor children, without threatening them with bodily harm and death.

How is that not considered libel or slander? That seems like a home-run case to sue the hell out of Snapchat for damaging her reputation for a joke made in a private conversation.

What part of this was lying about what she had said? I think the entire thing is absurd but libel usually requires falsehoods to be published. Slander is similar. It isn't just "damaged reputation"

>What part of this was lying about what she had said?

Swatting is illegal in some states (not enough, but some). I'd liken an escalation to authorities by a corporate entity as such. The lie is about the projected intent to harm.

> "Snapchat’s algorithm didn’t get the humor." Presumably, the actual text of the message was reviewed by a human? So the human(s) didn't get the humor either? EDIT: by "humans" I mean the FBI / cops.

Why would a human review it? That only drives up costs for the company. Easier to use algorithms for everything and maybe pay the occasional fine when something goes seriously wrong and legal proceedings result.

If a human did read it, it very likely was not someone who was a native English speaker making well below minimum wage of the area they are trying to contextualize.

Could you please stop posting unsubstantive comments and flamebait? You've unfortunately been doing it repeatedly. It's not what this site is for, and destroys what it is for.

If you wouldn't mind reviewing https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and taking the intended spirit of the site more to heart, we'd be grateful.

Is it possible to write a custom android keyboard that would let you use these compromised messenger apps by transmitting encrypted base64 text (plaintext to aes binary to base64 and back) and opaquely decrypting it? Could the app act like a translator app, but really provide encryption instead?

what would the benefit of this be over using something built for purpose like signal?

You could use any existing apps like fb messenger or WeChat, and it would dodge the "stigma" some have about signal.
