Neither CEO nor dev here but must say hn comments on CEOs are always wild. It’s like some caricature - like an attempt to draw an animal that has never been seen from a description Somehow founders constantly putting out fires, leading and strategizing makes sense but once they acquire the CEO title they apparently do nothing and swan about

The founders who become CEOs are generally the better ones. The ones that draw universal hatred are usually hired by the board of public companies, to enact unpopular measures to ensure shareholder returns, such as firing expensive developers to make room for cheap AI; or unfairly denying health care to policy holders (like Luigi's alleged victim); etc. The relatively rare heartless corporate CEO also receives dispro…

Nah. When I talk about CEOs I usually mean founders-turned-CEO because those are the types I've personally known and shared space with. Remember, this is HN.

Most of those guys are megalomaniacs, clueless, or clueless megalomaniacs.

Brian Thompson killed more people than Luigi.

This is the same talk that saw people turn a blind eye to all the horror in history. You invent a fake story that casts someone (Jews in Nazi Germany, the middle class in Soviet Russia, whatever it is) as worthy of death, and then you do everything you can to excuse the behaviour of their murderers.

No, he didn’t. Not by any logic that doesn’t also implicate every other executive, employee, vendor, and customer of every health insurance company, plus a huge number of other industries. To the point where the blame is so diffuse that it’s a pointless exercise. Edit since I can’t reply: if “murderer” means someone who takes actions that have nth-order effects of someone dying, with no reasonable or discernible limi…

Luigi should just done something that caused each of their executives to lose 10 years off their lifespan without actually killing them. Then he would have gotten rid of an entire lifetime but because it’s spread out, you couldn’t call him a murderer.

No, that's stupid too. Insurance companies pay for things that extend life. They don't shorten life. That would be things like tobacco companies. And even then, it's actually the customers of tobacco companies that do it.

> An is XYZ. This matters. You're probably totally innocent, but this comes across as being AI-written, especially in the context of an AI problem and when your response is pro-AI. For the next 3-12 months (maybe more, we'll see), I suspect you'll have a lot more success if you shy away from those speech patterns.

Sigh. I did write that personally, just as I have all my other HN posts. I'm moderately well known, and not anonymous. See www.animats.com. I wrote that because the last two times AIs built like organizations came up on HN, they were dismissed. Hence the somewhat out of character rhetoric. We have organizations of people for the usual reasons. Scale. Specialization. Robustness against failure and errors. All those wi…

I am actually with you here. Such a system probably needs to be battle tested in a specific domain of business to see where the deficiencies at this stage are.

To be fair I think its far easier to automate leadership jobs despite how they believe in greater self-worth. As a developer I keep running into problems that require some measure of creativity to solve or workaround. And regardless of how many years I've been in the industry I'm not running out of issues. They just keep getting more obscure. On the other hand leadership communication and problem resolution seem like…

The value-add for a meatbag CEO is the physical networking they do. They have to do executive functions as well, which could quite possibly be replaced with a well-trained LLM and even possibly exceed in overall quality. But an LLM can't go to conferences; they can't have Top Secret Meetings where a merger or acquisition is discussed; they can't run into Jim Executive of BigCorp Inc. in Vail and scheme up some big new thing; they can't fill a room full of institutional investors with confidence that the future is looking quite rosy.

Now, one can certainly argue that all of that is bad, or not even necessary, but it is a thing they do.

But I still think this is a good project, especially if it is demonstrated to excel at some significant fraction of what a meatbag CEO does. Because meatbag CEOs need to know that they are just as vulnerable to this sort of thing as their employees they so callously discard.

Being facetious of course, but didn't AI create their own reddit/chat rooms, what's stopping AI CEOs from "running into" other AI CEOs in other places?

The lack of barrier to entry is the problem. That barrier is highly desirable in this context (for better or worse)

I'd argue that those CEO-type (leadership) positions are a lot about relationships which AI's aren't going to be able to replicate.

I think we're all talking about CEOs with business degrees, who subscribe to the Jack Welsh school of domain-knowledge-free corporate leadership.

> I think its far easier to automate leadership jobs I have the opposite opinion. I've never been a CEO, and have intentionally avoided any sort of manager/C-level opportunities at all the various companies I've worked specifically because they require a lot of effort at personnel management, investor relationships, customer relationships, and generally things requiring having to talk to people . That kind of thing j…

Genuine question: am I missing some sarcasm here? When you say a CEO has to "talk to people", and then say it can't be done by a chat bot. That's literally the only thing a chat bot can do.

Especially in investor relationships and customer relationships, the talking itself is often not the important part. Yes, you need to align on terms and goals. But the interpersonal component is arguably more important. You need to project that you are a trustworthy partner with compatible goals. And being present as the CEO (or other manager) also shows a resource investment into the future partnership. Your time is valuable, and you took some of that time and dedicated it to this meeting. A chatbot can't do that
