Are you also sociopathic, and can you speak confidently even when you're blowing hot air? How about your bullying and/or flattery skills?

You guys are so daft about it. The fact that you do not see what work goes to keep company running and be responsible for thousands of people still having their jobs… Some work is 24/7 basically, when you have to keep business afloat there are no sick days or worse days. Your brain is 24/7 preoccupied with the work. Meanwhile you walk out after 8 hours and stop caring at all because - someone else does Someone else g…

Giving concrete examples of what work goes into the job would be more persuasive than ranting about how hard it is.

What does a CEO(and other managers) do really? Sometimes the claim is "set vision" - which AI can extract from the collective. Someimes the claim is to prioritize the work (with bias), AI can extract that from the collective too, right? Making resources available to the team? AI. Coordinating between teams? AI. Can the AI do this in a more un-biased way? Can it refine collective intelligence and desire into objective…

In companies large enough to have a board, the CEO's job is to manage relationships with customers, vendors, and wall street. If his company is big enough, he'll need to manage relationships with the government too. In fact, among founders whose business became big, the number one complaint you hear is how little of their busy day is spent on their actual product anymore.

AI is not very good at forming and building human relationships.

You’d think culture and personality fit with a board of directors would be an easier feat for a robot.

Depends on the board. The premium CEO robot will be powered by a bio-ethanol fuel cell so that it can play golf with the board of directors for as long as drinks are available.

Premium? Just go to a local dive bar and find an alcoholic robot with a penchant for burping loudly and bending things (e.g. golf clubs).

Tender its payment in booze, and you've already eliminated any monetary acquisition cost.

A serious point about this is that it's an AI that's an organization. This matters. People laughed at Gas Town, and at that "Fences, not Sandboxes" article yesterday.[1] They're both AIs set up as an organization, not an emulated human. They're both expensive to operate, because the AI members of the organization spend a lot of time talking with each other. They're both applied to frivolous problems. Now we have the…

A related point that I've been making privately for at least ten years to anyone that would listen, is that we've had Superhuman Intelligence for at least hundreds, if not thousands, of years in the form of corporations and institutions. No single human could design a rocket to go to the moon or keep all Wallmart stores supplied on a daily basis. Moreover when something like the CEO or US president changes, the polic…

collective intelligence is not a superhuman intelligence.

Markets solves the resource allocation problem, but it doesn't and realistically cannot be called intelligent (even tho it's been called wisdom of the crowds), in the same way that darwinian natural selection cannot be called intelligent design.

At my current job, a 10 person startup, the CEOs job is to generate leads, talk to potential customers, and close deals. He, along with the other founders, shape what we work on based on what he thinks it’s possible for us to sell. He’s essential to the business. At my previous 50k person company I never talked to anyone within 4 levels of the CEO and thought he was useless. But realistically he probably had a somewh…

That's a sales person.

There’s a reason that many CEOs have a stint in sales.

In a stable, profitable company, you need sales to keep the business solvent. And understanding the sales pipeline is pretty essential to effectively running a business.

Where this breaks down is when the C-suite forgets that you also need a product, and you need to keep innovating on that product in ways that bring value to current and future customers. This seems to happen pretty frequently.

Intelligence is only meaningful with respect to a goal or set of goals. I think organizations' intelligence can only be called superhuman if you ascribe them their own inscrutable goals, different from what people want their goals to be. But why would you do that? It's true that a lot of the debate about AI alignment - the good parts, anyway - also apply to human institutions.

> But why would you do that?

Because that is what actually gets pursued. The set of effective goals an organization is distinctly different from those of any of the individuals in that organization.

I’ve been saying people need to do this for over a year. I’ve known (personally) quite a few executive leaders and while I don’t think AI is a good replacement for any _good_ person at a job, the executive team is the low hanging fruit.

We glamorize execs but at the end of the day if you watch their careers they have plenty of failures (usually) and generally fail upwards. I’ve known some amazing CTOs and VPs of engineering and they’ve brought more to the table but a lot of what the executive team does is looking at the currents in the industry and trying to make educated guesses about where things are going. Yes more than that but this is a news.y comment.

This is one thing I appreciate about Japan. There is so many short nerdy looking CEOs

Oh the other hand, Japanese businesspeople are exceptionally good at the "walk about looking important" part.

It’s called the Gemba walk but it does more than just to look important. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemba
