Also the accountability problem! Sometimes we try to hold the corporation accountable and sometimes the individuals. It never seems adequate though.
I found the documentary "The Corporation" (2003) very instructive in that regard, particularly the segment with the BP CEO where the point is made that a company made up ethical individuals can still act unethically, or unaligned to human values, just by virtue of the incentive and legal structure governing the corporation.

#235Not every company needs a CEO, and that is ok. Companies do however need a decision making process and clear authorizations.
Creating an AI executive suite can bring some skills to the table, but it doesn't solve the authority question. I'm curious how this would work in practice...
What happens if the AI decides it wants to commit funds - does it have authority? What if it wants to change direction? What if it wants to fire a developer?

I understand your sarcasm but that’s what the limited in LLC is for. Unbounded liability means nobody starts a business, or they do it under the table without responsibility or taxes. Turns out we want successful private businesses much more than we want to hold a few nasty CEOs accountable.
LLCs and other corporate structures only (mostly) protect employees and shareholders from civil judgments. CEOs and other executives are also at risk of criminal penalties for Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) violations and similar. The typical corporate trick is to argue that the corporation itself is responsible for any wrongdoing, not a particular executive.
I can totally see this blame being shifted to AI in a "nobody got fired for choosing IBM" way.

#237Based on my observations, the most important characteristics of a CEO is to be over 6ft, and to walk about looking important. CEO jobs are safe until the humanoid robots have mastered this skill.

I see “this matters,” “XYZ matters,” “the last two are what matter” etc. everywhere now in all sorts of workplace documents.
Well, but what matters... matters. We can't let AI style disgust stop us from explicitly saying what we think matters and why!

#240This reminds me of William Gibson's "Burning Chrome", where the head of a syndicate is a Russian AI (Chrome) running things behind a smuggling front. Gibson basically predicted the AI CEO forty years early! A warning: Don't burn Chrome.
Time to read Mona Lisa Overdrive and see what we are still waiting from the future then.
BTW: not all predictions from Neuromancer are there yet...
