A related point that I've been making privately for at least ten years to anyone that would listen, is that we've had Superhuman Intelligence for at least hundreds, if not thousands, of years in the form of corporations and institutions. No single human could design a rocket to go to the moon or keep all Wallmart stores supplied on a daily basis. Moreover when something like the CEO or US president changes, the polic…

I mostly agree with you, but referencing Michael Levin, I'll contend that even individual cells have quite some intelligence. Granted, different from ours, but really good at solving the kind of problems cells have to solve.

Agreed. Michael Levin's work and discoveries are mind blowing! I was actually referencing that with the "electrical signals" nod (as well as neuronal activity) and Alan Turing's reaction-diffusion theory of morphogenesis with the chemical gradients. I'm not a molecular biologist so i don't know anything about the details, but the emergence of global phenomena from these local interactions fascinates me.

> A classic management failure is not paying enough attention to something. This is usually not a problem for computer systems. Humans are bandwidth-limited. Teams of AIs are far less bandwidth-limited. That's a feature, not a bug. CEOs should be focusing on the key goals of the business at a high level. Having an inexhaustible AI CEO that can pay attention to every little thing in the company could easily turn into…

Some of the non native English speakers on my team have started to use “blast radius” and “shape of” in the course of casual conversation. It’s unnerving.

> blast radius

The expression makes sense (a not dissimilar "trickle down" got accepted...). But used like in the text above, "the blast radius of your reduced productivity", it better be satire.

I know it's a joke but... Power is what makes them what they are, not knowledge or skills or empathy. If you don't like what this thing tells you to do, you just won't. It's not going to fire you. Therefore it's not going to steer the company away from disaster, or towards something good. It will be just a talking box.

> Power is what makes them what they are, not knowledge or skills or empathy.

No. Oh my god no.

This is just engineers coping with the reality that they've been filtered by skillchecks of a system they do not (yet) understand. But instead of doing the engineering thing and starting to understand said system, fox and grapes gets deployed.

Which isn't to say that there would be zero examples of what you describe, but the jump to "all are like this" is crazy, and, more importantly, anti-intellectual.

To paraphrase Andy Grove: > The job of an executive is: to define and enforce culture and values for their whole organization, and to ratify good decisions. (And that's the whole list! Nowhere do you find set tasks or make decisions) To me, that means that they're still pretty essential - on both fronts, AI needs values and AI needs a system that can tell whether decisions are good or not.

Enforcing culture is not something I believe is possible. Nobody is going to listen to the C suite suit over their own experience with their colleagues. People just end up saying the right buzzwords to appear that the culture has been adopted, but it will be mostly met with malicious compliance. If the culture is driven by incentives and rewards for behaviour, then that's a whole different ball game.

> Enforcing culture is not something I believe is possible.

> … the culture is driven by incentives and rewards for behaviour…

Not sure what your definition of enforcing is… but it doesn’t have to be by actual force.

When will we see the world's first fully autonomous company?

I'm really not sure why people are cheering for this.

We've been rightfully pissed at companies doing unethical things and getting away with it, as there is simply nothing you can hurt them with.

Why is HN fantasizing about making the companies even less hurtable? Are people here insane? Otoh, a lot of those accounts are just a few months old, so.. welp. Nice psyop we got here.

I'm under 6ft and have never been a CEO, so this appears to check out.

Also, it has 4 legs, so it must be a cat.

(Corroboration, not deduction: "has four legs, so it is more probably a cat". That is vs falsification: "short, hence not all managers are tall". Which does not work anyway going from the logical context to the stochastic context, because it becomes "the exception that confirms the rule". I trust you knew, but.)

Neither is dictatorship?

Business actually treats a pseudo-dictatorship (with the requisite yes-men) as "good leadership". Most times it's pretty simple, in my experience. A CEO either runs a business as a (1) Sales focus [best deals and vendors] or (2) Marketing focus [best reputation and trends] or (3) Investor focus [best boardroom friends]. Lots of other opinions are usually thrown out until there's really only one facet used for running…

is there a (4) or (5) that would be preferable? :)
