Brazil is trying that and getting a bad look from the USA. Can you imagine a smaller nation doing the same? What would the USA do?

Doctorow's point is that the USA's trade policy is unilaterally capricious and malevolent toward the best of its allies, so other nations' actions ultimately cannot be said to have any mitigating causal effect. Might as well just go for it. F the DMCA.

b) In his talk Doctorow gives examples of business opportunities that are actually being repressed by the laws against reverse engineering

It's a kind of enshittification pattern where a site based on user content closes off more and more access over time.

Xcancel and Nitter are/were easier to work with, afaict.

It's mostly useful if you want to link someone to a post on twitter to people who don't have an twitter account.

Interesting--I'm still using old.reddit.com with no problem, without an account. Maybe the change is not broadly rolled out?

They’ve been rolling it out gradually. There was a thread on HN about it a couple of weeks ago, it just started affecting my IPs a few days ago.

It’s managed to do what years of self-imposed content blockers etc. on my own side have failed to do - finally broke my Reddit addiction!

Someone could certainly make a case in a lawsuit for an ADA violation. I bet if people organized, the city would listen before it got to that point There are open meeting laws like the Brown Act but I think that only restricts relying on social media for deliberation. Not communication There is also Lindke v. Freed (2024) which holds that public officials using social media can be sued under the First Amendment viola…

What open medium would you suggest as an alternative to X?

I miss the days when we had an RFC, people got together, came up with a solution, and we ended up with decentralized NNTP or something. Everything is someone's little kingdom now.

I would like this to be the final push for people to get off x but I suspect its going g to stay and I guess I don't get to see news from my local council anymore.

I've never really noticed a difference in the trends for either. For the most part, all of the comments are about how anywhere but HN is complete shit and even HN is not as good as it used to be. There are always a few saying "but that's where everyone is". Inevitably, someone will post a link to something we all hate on constantly, be it one of these kinds of sites or a paywalled news article or whatever, and we're all just supposed to either know the currently working proxy or hope someone has already posted the link in the comments.

One thing I have universally noticed is it doesn't matter what it is or how many sides there are to it, someone always thinks HN is unfair to one side in favor of another. Usually multiple someone at the same time, and usually not even from the opposing side as each other claims.

And I don't know, maybe there is an 80/20 bias or something. I just don't know how I would or wouldn't reliably know that on intuition/things I notice rather than running the numbers on comment data.
