Chapters and artwork have been features of podcasting since the very beginning. They've been supported in mp3 for like over 20 years.

This is about the structure of metadata, why would you want to tie this to a file format? Even Apple realizes that is not the way to go. And what about transcripts then, Person/guest metadata, Chapter artwork, Live tags (so you can tune in live in a podcasting app)? "Some subset of these features is in MP3" is not a valid response.

I think you'll need a more sterling critique than 'why would you wnat to tie this to a file format', to the most successful open source media technology of all time. Aside - yes there are or were legal issues with the fraunhofer patents for MP3, but these weren't enough to stop the LAME project and expired in 2017. The combination of MP3 and RSS should be studied as quite likely the most popular open format ever. They've kept podcasting out of the hands of wannabe privatisers from spotify to apple for twenty years.

> decentralization of power Insightful! We struggle with containing true decentralised protocols like BGP, Bittorrent, and Bitcoin. Email, RSS, and also Nostr are too simple. The core protocol does not contain any measures against spam, abuse and fraud. No accountability. Just launch a million fake identities and spam these network. Your Internet address got blocked? Try the a16z-funded startup that uses a USA-based…

the main method against spam in Nostr is probably lightning. You can simply attach sats that are worth a couple cents to the content. Note that lightning has the concept of hold invoices so the receiver may or may not chose to actually claim the money. I.e. your friends and family will always attach 50cents to a message, knowing that you will never claim it anyway. If a spammer attaches 50cents to a message, the reci…

That is a great point! You can attach real money to messages to prevent spamming. However, this has been tried many times and failed to get mass adoption. Friction is too high when users need to load money on their fresh wallet. Giving everybody their own karma-credits could be the best of both worlds.

AI slop is a fundamental problem. The signal in Youtube clicks/views has gone to zero. Even adversarial machine learning can't make it a nice place anymore. I think its even doomed if we find a collective system that filters crap.

btw RSS usage is consistently declining, its 1999 server-focused technology.

Oh look, an anti-crypto guy that advocates for L402 support!!: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48281948 Beeeep, wrong. Next question.

If you have any other proposal for true micropayments (as in fractions of cents of value that flow freely) please, indulge me. I for one would prefer to give value via lightning over forcing my eyeballs on ads everywhere I look. Same goes for the agents I deploy, I'd like to have methods of returning value for whatever value they extract (in the form of information).

You seem to not have understood my previous message at all.

You said I'm anti-crypto, then I linked you to a msg I wrote in the past advocating for L402 (which is a Lightning-based protocol).

I was just telling you that you're wrong. I'm a big believer that Lightning is the only way to solve micropayments.

Now get your conspiracy theories somewhere else please.

You can't blame the protocol for the user it attracts. It is in early development. Just imagine the year is 1996 and you are complaining that WWW, IRC and the USENET is full of male tech nerds with a STEM background and a taste in SciFi/Fantasy culture. It will take some a while for the evolution to happen until you can get your beauty and makeup styling content.

>full of male tech nerds with a STEM background and a taste in SciFi/Fantasy culture. Anything like this in 2026?

You're posting on it.

The homepage could be a description of ATProto. Except lots of people around me already use ATproto, and a successful European instance has just been launched, Eurosky, focusing on expanding the protocol with apps doing other things than micro-messages (Bluesky). Why should I care ? Honest question.

ATproto is defacto not decentralized and the protocol is about 50x more complicated to get working than NOSTR. Whereas in ATproto you have to find a place to register an account, say a domain for yourself or use someone else's domain, in NOSTR creating an account is nothing more than a public/private key that is generated on the fly. Then is the storage of information. Whereas in ATproto information is stored in plen…

OK so Nostr is for people that look for pure decentralisation ? This decentralisation so complicated that no general public person will ever connect ?

Where owning lemonde.fr doesn't distinguish you from a user pretending to be the biggest national French newspaper ?

Because Eurosky can ban you.

Well of course they can. Elon Musk should have been banned for hate speed and racism, for instance.

I indeed misunderstood, didn't realize that was you yourself you linked to. Sorry we are on the same boot it seems. Still, you're wrong about Nostr being useless without Lightning. And it is unhelpful to suggest it is.

Adoption by too narrow an audience can totally poison a protocol for the rest of us. Bit torrent is a superior way to move data around (as compared with http downloads). But its early associations appear to have forever tainted it against widespread adoption.

I doubt widespread adoption was slowed down with mainstream news about BitTorrent, or what are you talking about more specifically ? Others peer to peer sharing platforms got much more popular despite mainstream news about them like LimeWire and eMule

Lack of BitTorrent support in browsers is big thing that is missing. Brave and Opera have it, but all the mainstream browsers don't. Thus torrent downloads never got out of its specific niche.

That said, I don't think piracy is to blame here, but more the murky nature of copyright in general, with BitTorrent you automatically become redistributor of everything you download and that's just a huge liability and privacy risk that I can easily see browser developers wanting to avoid.

Also browser developers have gotten lazy, they couldn't even find the resources to keep FTP alive, so I doubt BitTorrent would have survived for long even if they tried adding it.

That would be NIP-05: https://nostrcompass.org/en/topics/nip-05/

Le Monde adds a text file at https://lemonde.fr/.well-known/nostr.json with the npubs (NOSTR public keys) of every person that they certify as trusted.

So then you go around using "maelito@lemonde.fr" and anyone can find your public key on the official Le Monde site, verify that you are indeed someone associated to that domain.

NOSTR is a protocol so there's no entity for you to be bitter with... You can be annoyed at the people who were on there, but that's a different subject. There's probably a better analogy than this, but what you're describing would be like playing soccer and being annoyed that your teammates are furries. Go find another team to play with.

But now imagine that the regulating body of your favorite hobby sport is deeply corrupt and fundamentally profit driven, so while playing with your friends is still fun, just thinking about ever competing at the regional level makes you shiver. [1] Sure, you can always fork a protocol/not federate with who you dislike etc., but you might find yourself fighting an uphill battle against other people’s experiences and p…

Sure, Fifa is quite corrupt. I still like to play soccer with my friends and organized sports in my town. I don't refuse to play the game simply because of Fifa.
