There'd be lots of PHEVs which don't meet Euro 7. I doubt anyone is bothering to try to meet it for anything not sold in Europe.

I'm sure even some companies who plan to sell in the EU will have to update their models to address regulations that haven't taken effect yet.

Your definition of normal makes me suspicious. I thought GM were "the first to make an EV that looked normal". Tesla was the first to make a "software defined vehicle", 10 years before this became mainstream. Tesla is the Google of EVs: the UX sucks, but everybody wants to copy it.

Yes, you can make mechanical handles that are flush with the car body. In which you push one end and then the other end sticks out, allowing you to open the door.

The fancy electric handles are just for show. They’re cool looking and engineers salivate over this stuff. But they’re a bad idea.

Agreed. If you watch old American sitcoms one of the guys, typically a dad, will always be fiddling with his car and tune and maintain it. That was a stereotype for a reason.

Some part of me is richly satisfied in knowing that I will never have to spend another moment troubleshooting performance and economy issues with a Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carb and the combination vacuum/mechanical spark advance of GM's HEI distributor.

I think we're definitely in a better place these days.

And I'll be thinking of this, and all of the money that I didn't dump down the throat of a carburated engine, the next time I get out my special bendy-ratchet (that articulates in two different places) and single-purpose crowsfoot socket to change an O2 sensor that has finally gone wonky after hundreds of thousands of miles. :)

Euro 7 takes effect in a couple of months. For practical purposes, that means that anything on sale in Europe already has to comply; no-one’s going to launch a car on the basis that any they don’t sell by November become a waste product.

These defences of authoritarian regimes like that in China almost read like that old 'Soviet joke' where a westerner says "at least I can criticise the US government without fear of repercussion" whereupon the Soviet citizen answers "I can also criticise the US government without any fear of repercussion".
