I’m interested to see if this spurs other countries to push back on this administration. Once you get a couple of countries to collectively stand firm is when things take a turn. Bullies can only push for so long

What Canada is doing is turning to trade with other countries. It is the main solution we have to this issue. It is a long game, but necessary. Ganging up on the US isn't likely to work well.

it's also just waiting for Trump to be less powerful & making sure a bad precedent is not established, which is a good idea

Countries have their own self interest in mind Take the USMCA - Canada and the US at times team up against Mexico and then the pendulum swings, line item by line item - no one has anyone’s back and they all have short memories A deal with the US when others turns away from them is still a good deal

I think it's a prisoners dilemma & that democracy, with its short term incentives, leads to politicians taking the easy way out, even if it creates bad precedent for their countries.

obviously democracy is still better than the alternative though

Tariffs are a moral and economic necessity. Every country should have some kind of tariff on foreign goods and services to offset regulatory asymmetries. It's not fair that an entire industry in one country is wiped out and replaced by that of a foreign industry with fewer regulations (and thus lower operational costs and higher margins)... It's bad not only from the business and opportunities perspective, but also f…

And what exactly are the environmental regulations that Canada has less than USA?

Of course this is why we have tariffs still, against china for example.

But this time it is rather used for extortion.

The world should've collectively recognised what Liberation Day was and responded together, in lock step, and in kind. Instead, the Europeans caved, Japanese caved (PM resigned after doing so), Republic of Korea caved (PM resigned after doing so), India of course caved and so on, shattering any prospect of collective action which might pull the rogue hegemon back into line. Now, the US is simply able to renege or ren…

India has no trade deal. Trump announced they did without signing anything. He just makes shit up and people believe him. India still buys oil from Russia

>> What are we waiting for. For Europe to become fully self-sufficient when it comes to defense, for one thing.

I think it can be Europe, Canada, Australia, and South Korea. The world has the technology. Canada has the resources and the manufacturing capacity. Europe has the money. It can be done. Look at Ukraine. They are becoming a military superpower in terms of technology and experience.

They have everything but the will power. As annoying as I find Trump he is correct that everyone expects American boys and girls to be willing to die on their behalf while doing basically nothing to prevent war.

For example, Germany now expects America involvement in Ukraine despite Germany funding the war against Ukraine for years with their purchase of Russian oil

The world seems unhappy unless American kids are dying for them. Their own children are unwilling to do so, but little Jimmy from iowa is supposed to.

If you want to know why Americans support trump it's because Americans of my generation knew American kids who died fighting for foreign countries. Nothing radicalizes a population more.

I think there's a notion that the imposition of tarifs will ultimately affect the amount the country imports. However that stick only kinda-sorta works. As a reference - in the country I live in, exports to the US rose in the year after "liberation day". Because of 2 things; Americans like to buy stuff and tarifs imposed on everyone doesn't cause importers to source elsewhere - it's just business as usual. Take for e…

I think your handwaving away the impact isn't all that convincing and some don't make all that much sense. > American products are very expensive, and Canada is one of the few markets where they are viable. That's why DJT is so upset with alcohol bans in Canada. American alcohol is "very expensive" and Canada is the only viable market? That makes no sense. It's not like Canada is a bastion of cheap labor. DJT is brin…

I don't think Canada loses the US market. The implication is that if the product gets more expensive then the US simply stops using it, or sources elsewhere.

Take hockey sticks. Does this mean Minnesota stops playing hockey? Or they play without sticks? Or maybe they'll buy their sticks from...?

Where I live there was much doom and gloom. Then our exports went up....

Of course small exporters are predicting calamity. It's a good sound bite, and it's definitely the obvious prediction. I'm just not convinced it'll have that effect.

The world collectively had so much trade barriers for US goods and services and still has. They just weren’t direct like tariffs.

> trade barriers for US goods and services are the trade barriers in the room with us?

I mean, yes. An easy one that is omnipresent is that Canada mandates Canadian radio stations to play a certain amount of Canadian content giving advantage to Canadian artists

Of course this is fine... Countries should protect their industries..just don't get on your moral high horse when America does it

To be clear, I am against Trump's approach, but all the pearl clutching is exhausting.

Trump just went directly after Canada's sovereignty. Nobody else has done anything even remotely similar since I don't know China's occupation of Tibet.

America has just unmasked itself and shown what they really think of Canadians.

These countries need to grow a spine and make violating American copyright legal, or at least remove their anti circumvention laws.

No need to make violating American copyright legal. Just remove their equivalent of the DMCA. I can't understand why there isn't a single country that did that.

There are some. America conquered them and reversed it.
