Are they still dominant? They can't even win their war against Iran. And everyone is slowly moving away from the dollar. The US as world hegemon is counting its days.

Hasn’t won against Iran. Is out of ammo. Cannot win against Russia in the proxy war with Ukraine. Cannot match China with their long term energy plans. Has debt that explodes Has a president that sells early access to his tweets for 100k$ a year ; insider trading in the open. The USA are not in a good posture right now.

Ukraine existing even with Trump waging war against Iran negates this argument

This reads like a non sequitur to me. What is your point?

Canada's (Carney's) framing is basically propaganda by omission.

How so? Is the thing you accuse them of omitting this thing and the trade deficit? How is that relevant?

I've had a trade deficit with supermarkets my whole life. Not once has any one of them bought anything from me, yet I keep buying and buying...

How does that justify Canada openly lying?

What is the lie?

The world should've collectively recognised what Liberation Day was and responded together, in lock step, and in kind. Instead, the Europeans caved, Japanese caved (PM resigned after doing so), Republic of Korea caved (PM resigned after doing so), India of course caved and so on, shattering any prospect of collective action which might pull the rogue hegemon back into line. Now, the US is simply able to renege or ren…

The world collectively had so much trade barriers for US goods and services and still has. They just weren’t direct like tariffs.

Yes sure. Add it to the pile of contradictory goals:

1. Bring back manufacturing jobs 2. Remove trade barriers 3. Make US rich by collecting huge amount of tariffs

If 1 is true then there is no benefit for countries to remove trade barriers or pay tariffs because now there is no leverage (manufacturing jobs to protect).

If 2 is true then there is no leverage for other things to happen - countries aren't going to voluntary remove trade barriers without keeping the jobs or paying tariffs.

So and so forth.

That not how politics works. It is much slower and hidden process. EU fast tracked Mercosur and other trade deals. China and Japan is slowly dumping US treasury bills, Canada is in open trade confrontation and is diversifying toward China. Everybody is shifting away from US weapons suppliers. Nobody is willing to help with Iran even on symbolic level.

You are both right. The world capitulates more than it should. But the world is also moving away and building contingencies. The world needs leadership. And Canada is helping with that. I do not think that reciprocal tariffs are actually the answer though. They hurt both sides and the US is not a rational enough actor to respond like you hope they will. The answer is in shifting trade away from the US and isolating t…

But what tool do you use to shift trade away from the US to other countries? Tariffs are perhaps the most efficient mechanism.

I’m interested to see if this spurs other countries to push back on this administration. Once you get a couple of countries to collectively stand firm is when things take a turn. Bullies can only push for so long

It won't. This isn't the first time Canada has had to stand alone against Trump while the rest of the world goes along to get along.

To be fair as a percentage of exports, Canada (and Mexico, in different ways) is at a completely different level of economic integration than pretty much any other country. We have no choice but to take a unique stand. That being said, we are so lucky to have Carney at this moment. Canada hasn’t exactly had flexible, informed, and eloquent leadership in a long time that has been willing to think and work for the long term.

It is a good thing canadians are so nice. Dropping US alcohol is a tiny thing compared to some of the weapons canada might deploy. Look at all the back-and-forth deals in recent years and you will see an exemption for oil and potash. Think gas prices are high now? See what happens if canada starts shipping less crude. Think food prices are high? See what happens when there is no fertilizer because canada has restrict…

America will not be annexing Canada. Now or ever.

What a vile and predictable comment.
