Huh 30% of our lumber just got 50% more expensive. Good thing we don't have shortages of affordable housing that need new construction to solve. Brilliant stuff Donald. Truly some 4D chess moves.

As a Canadian, I hope this crisatunity translates into rock-bottom prices for lumber at home.

In reality unfortunately it likely means mills will sit idle or shut down entirely. Prices might come down a little bit hopefully

Ya know, there's not a damned thing I can do about any of this, other than TRY to get citizenship elsewhere and leave this shithole. And fascism is taking hold lots of other places as well. Canada's a laugh, with Alberta seperatism. And they also had trump trucker caravans. EU? They're boiling in their own juices with the fact they now need air conditioning due to climate devastation... And many countries make it ill…

>And many countries make it [aircon] illegal without health reasons.

Name one country that has done this.

You still think any of his moves are driven by 'what's good for the US'? I think it's motivated entirely by schemes to stuff his pockets with money.

> “motivated entirely … to stuff his pockets” Someone's pockets, must be gnomes: • PHASE 1: COLLECT UNDERPANTS. (tariff "foreign" goods desired by Americans, collect upon import from companies, clarify spiked prices experienced by consumers ‘entirely’ due to prior admin policies) • PHASE 2: … (let simmer) • PHASE 3: PROFIT. ("return" tariff costs to companies)

The underpants gnomes. Well played!

The world should've collectively recognised what Liberation Day was and responded together, in lock step, and in kind. Instead, the Europeans caved, Japanese caved (PM resigned after doing so), Republic of Korea caved (PM resigned after doing so), India of course caved and so on, shattering any prospect of collective action which might pull the rogue hegemon back into line. Now, the US is simply able to renege or ren…

The world collectively had so much trade barriers for US goods and services and still has. They just weren’t direct like tariffs.

> trade barriers for US goods and services

are the trade barriers in the room with us?

It has been shown time and time again that the only thing the US administration respects is brutish headbutting, so I cannot blame the Canadian government for responding with such a stance. It is unfortunate for everyone though that it is happening. Ultimately, these tariffs just tax the consumer for no real gain on either side. I think I speak for many when I say 2028 cannot come soon enough.

They still can of course, all they need to do is collectively start selling off their US treasuries. The US is at a highly vulnerable and precarious point with their potential bond market debt spiral situation, and this is a point of leverage that can be exploited to encourage improved behavior from a bully. This capital can then be reallocated into domestic investment to continue to decouple from the US. Very simila…

Couldn't the US buy back more bonds through QE than any foreign country could sell?

I’m interested to see if this spurs other countries to push back on this administration. Once you get a couple of countries to collectively stand firm is when things take a turn. Bullies can only push for so long

Pushing back against a US that is at this point economically and militarily dominant does nothing. It might push for cooperations outside the US-sphere.

> It might push for cooperations outside the US-sphere.

BRICS is just that for oil.

The US is not indefatigable. As of March 2026 the nine largest foreign holders of US Treasury securities are Japan, UK, China, France and Canada.

All nations the US is jerking around. If they dump bonds US in big trouble. Oh, and the US is almost $40T in debt.

The sentiment here is that nobody wants U.S. citizens to be negatively impacted by trade restrictions or tariffs. We are figuratively and, in many cases, literally friends and family. (Aside, even if our provincial governments allow southern booze back on shelves, it'll stay there.) It would be decidedly un-Canadian to leverage electricity, potash, or other commodities necessary for survival in trade negotiations --…

> nobody wants U.S. citizens to be negatively impacted by trade restrictions or tariffs. As much as it pains me to say it as an American, little will change unless US citizens are negatively impacted. Trump is losing power and support in the US precisely because people are becoming more aware that he's hurting them.

I see the same thing in Russia. It seems like there is no such thing as a civilian target because getting your opponents citizens to uprise and while yours to support you is the key strategy now.

It’s Vietnam Hearts and Minds all over again.

This is a classical problem. In theory it works when majority of the players work together and move in same direction, however everyone being opportunistic here makes in infeasible from long term perspective. Europe itself is in a difficult stage, its dealing with Russia on one end, has trust issues with China and now the its long term partner has gone rouge. The result of all this would be a mandate to be self sufficient aka anti-globalization

The craziest thing is, that in spite of the obvious, balatant corruption and supreme incompetence of the US govt, Trump still has around 35% approval rating. That means the hardcore MAGA base is a third of the US population. I genuinely don't know how to reconcile that with the long term future of the United States.

That plus the 20% or so that don't care enough to vote.

Maybe the 20% don't want a fucking thing to do with the shitshow.
