That's a good use for AI. Type loosely and ask it to fix up the spelling, capitalization and punctuation.

Fixing spelling, capitalization, and punctuation...that's just a spell checker, no fancy LLM needed.

Tell that to ios’ autocorrect that seems to really suck at it lately. I’d like to have an llm that doesn’t screw up and replace actual words with what it probabilistically thought I was saying.

Tangentially I also hate if someone answers with a voice message. I can understand that there are situations where you just can't type out the answer and those exceptions are of course fine, but if you post a voice message or god forbid a video message in a group chat you are forcing everyone to take the time and sit through it.

Literacy is dying. I suspect that's part of the reason some people hate AI. To the semi-literate a few paragraphs of text represent a significant investment of their time.

In my experience it is the semi-literate who are most impressed by AI writing and the ones who use it the most to write for them.

this maybe a me issue any kind of softness in language like “i’ll-considered” sounds so sterile that i sense hatred underneath. too much time in big companies. more sharing a crazy person take on how different words can be interpreted counter to the intent.

The way I handle those, especially with the people who leave me 8 minute long voice notes, is to have WhatsApp transcribe the voice note for me. Or, if that’s not possible, either ignore the voice note or listen to it at 2x speed.

I was surprised WhatsApp didn't give me a "transcribe" button (as recently as yesterday). Seems like it'd be pretty easy to implement that.

I don’t have a transcribe button in the Windows app, but my Android phone has a transcribe button.

I think this is a pretty unfair takeaway when AI generated text is often so wordy, flowery, and full of jargon and abstract nouns. People are never going to read East of Eden or academic dissertations as quickly as direct, simple language either

I always wonder why people generalize AI writing like this. If it's giving you responses like this that you don't like it's as simple as prompting it to give more succinct answers that aren't full of jargon and abstract nouns. I have chatgpt set to 'Efficient (concise and plain)' in the settings which works well to prevent this. And if efficient isn't enough some brief custom instructions will do wonders.

Because this is a thread about other people's usage of AI, so how I/you personally use it is irrelevant because we still have to deal with everyone else pasting AI, in which case it is generally long and wordy.

In many cases someone else already knows the answer and your interruption of them is less time lost for the company than you looking up the answer.

Unless the organisation is on the brink of collapse there is valuable learning and understanding in honestly attempting the research. If nothing else one gets a bit more knowledge on how to research the topic, although some knowledge of the state of the field is hard to avoid if you're so new to it that it's resource intensive to research.

For the company it would probably pay off better (over time) to let the people who regularly get stuck after trying nothing spend some energy figuring out than what they get in return for shipping them to conferences.

Say more? I’ve found it quite useful and not a source of fear. It’s effective at calling out disrespect (human to human communication where one party stops participating as a human), and has been effective for me in writing my own communications more crisply and carefully

Fear of being tagged as AI even if you write the text yourself.

For me personally, it's fear to use – and —. I have my versions of XKB keyboard layouts that handily map these but I don't use them anymore. Nor do I use emoji, because some 18-6 months ago AU output abused emoji.
