Microsoft's school of naming versions, windows (95->98->xp->vista->seven->8...) and xbox (360, one, series x)
Don't worry, Microsoft has addressed their naming difficulties by determining that everything they ever make will now be called CoPilot.

#322Clear and interesting names is extremely good customer experience. Most companies name their products straight from the ERP system, creating incomprehensible codes that sounds like they come from Star Trek. Ikea has pioneered so much within service design (design beyond the actual product). The in-store journey, the self-assembly, the assembly instructions, clear naming, clear product display, in-store restaurant exp…
At the opposite end of the spectrum we have Sony Mobile, where product names are probably assigned by their worst enemy. You can fully expect them to release a high end phone called Xperia one II 10 as successor to last year's Xperia one III And also a low-end phone called Xperia II 10 Ultra Making it impossible for buyers to know which phone to buy this year.
Currently, their road groupsets rank like this (low to high):
Claris (8-speed)
Sora (9-speed)
Tiagra (10-speed)
105 (12-speed, available in both mechanical and electronic)
Ultegra (12-speed, electronic)
Dura-Ace (12-speed, electronic)
More niche, but Ltwoo (Chinese bicycle parts maker) uses "R9" for its 11-speed groupset offering and "RX" for its 12-speed.Re: How does IKEA come up with names for its products?

The umlaut does mean that to a Swede it is not the same word sound at all. I can only guess that is why it was allowed?
The sound is still very close in this situation (ä before r) my guess is they didn't have the Spanish sarna on their radar
What do you base this on? Do you speak Swedish? Did you look up the phonetics?
They are no more similar than A and E in English.

#325> Every possible product name is carefully checked to avoid undesirable meanings in other languages, political or religious affiliations and fit into our global profile. I present to you "Svalka" wine glasses. Dump", rubbish heap", or easy, promiscuous woman of ill repute in informal Baltic (and Slavic?) slang.
My favorite Ikea product name.
Fart means speed, smäll (smell) means impact or bang.

#326I was looking at IKEA's home automation stuff, some of which uses the name TRÅDFRI and I thought the "FRI" part sounded like "free" and sure enough this just means "wireless". I'm guessing the "TRÅD" part is possibly a cognate of English "thread", so "thread free" is a literal translation. (I don't speak Swedish so forgive me if I'm completely off on this.)

> BYDGOSZCZ sofa This may not even be that far off from reality, looking at the sort of names rando brands on Amazon often have...
At least BYDGOSZCZ is a real word in a real language
* I'm sure it's not exactly the same, but people appreciate the effort of getting 90% of the way there by doing that.

And then, unbeknownst to what the Sci-Fi future might bring, an Italian home appliance manufacturer names themselves SMEG.
SMEG stands for Emilian (the Italian region) Metallurgical Enamels in Guastalla (a town close to Reggio Emilia).

Then maybe you'll enjoy the swedish joke ”It’s not the fart that kills, it’s the smäll” Fart means speed, smäll (smell) means impact or bang.
