Along with remembering facts, it is important to insightfully give ‘weight’ to the facts.

AI gives ‘weights’ to things depending on its own priorities or corporate interests. Our brain gives the weights to various facts depending on personal insights. (X is painful, Y is more effort but less painful etc etc)

In a real world scenario these both can act in complimentary ways and AI just supplements the human working memory at the end of the day.

There is an ability to hold ideas in the mind simultaneously. Some can hold a great deal more than others. It can be exercised, but is definitely bound by genetics. Von Neumann could absorb vast amounts of information, follow extraordinarily complicated arguments and move between mathematical fields with astonishing speed. Yet Wigner still regarded Einstein’s understanding as deeper, more penetrating and more original. Von Neumann may have had the greater raw intellectual processing capacity, but Einstein was more likely to reconceptualize the problem itself.

Present-day AI appears more like a machine-amplified version of the first set of abilities than the second.

No we don't. Public schools are incentivized not to help high performers. It actually hurts their metrics and budget. The widespread gifted/talented experience in public school ended in the late 90s. Humanoid robots are obviously more than marketing. The entirety of human civilization is human shaped. Making robots that are human shaped is easier and more efficient than redesigning and rebuilding everything that exists.

Generalist humanoid robots that are able to operate in unstructured environments weren't an option (they still aren't an option for the majority of operations). The humanity had no ways of building them.

Anyway, it's true that replacing an automated production line with a crowd of generalist robots doesn't make sense. Generalist humanoid robots are intended to replace the remaining human workers.

Another ai article, another group of self-identified smart people claiming they are not as smart as a statistical engine. "Are most ideas not original?" Sure. "Was every idea discovered first at one time or another?" Sure. Maybe what's going on is you are not as smart as you think you are and intelligence is less proprietary than you believe. Nobody owns ideas. What matters is if you know which ones to use. There is a distinction between knowledge and intelligence and between epistemic effectiveness and interpolation about the mean of the corpus. If AI wows you likely that's because you are actually more average than you believe. I have used AI a lot. Never once do I think this tool out thought me. Because it doesn't think at least in a human way at all. Being able to retrieve some information or connect some dots is less meaningful than knowing what matters. AI needs vast working memory because it lacks endogenous constraint driven judgement. Whereas humans historically lacking judgment died and now more often they just make fools of themselves online. Naturally our brains are more epistemically effective for solving problems that concern humans than something that approximates what we have though in mean and written down.

Yeah this matches my experience too. I noticed this in Anki. Some cards are effortless, some take a bit of practice, and some I fail over and over again no matter how many times I practice them.

Anki kept flagging my relatives birthdays as "leeches!"

I found it kind of hilarious and infuriating that the software I used to remember things tells me "this thing is hard for you to remember so you should just give up."

Not taking either side here - but surely a lot of cosmological phenomena couldn't be testable/verifiable at the time they were theorized either? (thinking of black holes for example - they were theorized way before we had observations. And presumably a lot of particle physics can similarly be theorized before we built the technology to experimentally verify them)

Black holes were theorized and you could design experiments that, given the proper instruments, would allow them to be detected. Relativity was similar (famously, the curvature of spacetime was demonstrated during a solar eclipse by being able to see stars that should have been behind the sun).

String theory has nothing even theorized that would allow us to prove it.
