Not sure about tomhow, but dang (and sama before him) commented on this many times, it's called "flamewar detector" if you want to search. Here is the first link I've found: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39232311 (here he does not say it's flagged, just demoted so I might be misremembering, but I am pretty sure I read that it can flag too).

That's as I remember, flame war and rapid short volatile exchange detection leading to down ranking weighting .. I had the impression that explicit [flagging] was the visible mechanism for explicit core user disapproval (for inclusion, not necessarily of specific content) and kept separate from the invisible hand of algorithmic weights.

I think if all protesters really just protested (and nobody tried smashing ICE cars tail lights, physically blocking their vehicles, and damaging officers' hearing), that would go a long way helping prevent this. So the measure protesters can take is to discipline their ranks.

How will you stop a federal agent from showing up and and smashing some cars to generate bad will? You know protests are open for anyone to join, yeah?

So, if you go read through all the FBI reports about Black Lives Matters you find references to OMGs. Apparently a lot of various organizations like Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs will use large events like protests as cover.

There's also counter-protesters which will attempt to agitate (they might argue the protesters agitated them) and cause problems.

So, largely protesters cannot be disciplined because not everybody there is actually in agreement as to why they're there.

That said. It's a public roadway. The proper punishment for driving poorly is a police citation not a bullet.

Why would we throw away our institutions after just a term and a half of a bad president? We haven't even made it to the midterms yet, where Trump and the Republicans look pretty likely to eat shit. Calling for assassinations and riots is entirely reactionary.

What institutions are left?
