My pixel fold 9 got 3 hardware failures (battery, speaker and folding sensor) and was warranty replaced for a fold 10. While it was being replaced I was using a non foldable phone and was totally missing the folding experience (large screen and multitasking for some personal use cases), so I am team foldables for now. otoh I do not get the idea behind the flip phones

Not a fix for the battery, but if you're on Android, enable developer settings and change your animations to 0.5x speed (there are three settings to change). Every OS animation will take half as long. It makes an aging phone feel much snappier.

Won't 0.5x speed make it slower (Driving 20mph instead of 40mph will get you somewhere in double the time).

I just checked my phone, the phrasing is "Animation scale .5x" (Among other numbers), meaning it's scaled to take n times the time.

Phone advancements between 2007-2017 was insane. I wonder how much of it was Apple catching up to the cutting edge of phone tech leveraging its iOS advantage, vs just natural pace of innovations. Feels like there had been an invisible war.

Same here. Battery health is 84% which is not disastrous. But charging is a chore. The charging port doesn't work half the time (a problem in the car especially). I would also like it to be lighter, which I probably won't get.

The charging port might just need cleaning. I’m still using an iPhone 11 and the charging port was getting super unreliable. I cleaned it a couple of weeks ago - gently, with a toothpick and a flashlight, there was some lint stuck inside - and it’s worked perfectly since then.

This - I have the iFixit cleaning kit which has a really tiny plastic pick / brush thing - I think it might be a dental crevice cleaning tool, like floss but for bigger gaps. I got a wad of lint out of my lightning port and all of a sudden CarPlay works perfectly. Same thing happens to USB-C ports.

I have a feeling that making durable fold in half cell phones is just not something we can do cheaply, so they have to be billed as premium to justify it.

Also isn't that terminology settled? Fold for passport, flip for flip phone. I'm sure Apple will invent a new word but everyone doing foldables seems to use those consistently.

I've been pleasantly surprised at how robust my 2024 Razr (regular edition) has been. I think if the outside screen was a hair bigger (like on the Plus and Ultra), it would be significantly more useful.

I tried the Clicks keyboard case, and it was cute, but wasn't actually better to type on, especially while the phone was open. It was fun pretending to have a Blackberry / Razr hybrid (2007 called!).

I think it would be neat to have a small square phone like the size and shape of the folded Razr but that doesn't actually unfold, and has the camera on the back. It would be a pretty handy device and encourage me to read more paper books or on a Kindle or something instead of scrolling.

between the cost, lack of interesting new features, and often addition of features i do not want, it’s starting to seem like i may never get a new phone, and i’m ok with that

I'm sure that's why there aren't cheap ones yet, but technology marches forward, and I'm sure we'll get there eventually.

And in many contexts yes, but I still see plenty of articles listing best/cheapest foldable phones that conflate the two. I can't even fully fault them either, because the "flip" ones do "fold".

If you like taking pictures with your phone, the cameras are still improving steadily enough that you'll see meaningful improvements if you upgrade every three years

Anecdotally, I can't tell much of a difference between the newer phone of my girlfriend (latest iPhone) and my iPhone 13. Maybe if I nitpick on it, but for my untrained eye they all look 'good enough'.

Plus, many people who take photos on their phone will upload it to a service like instagram/discord which compresses the photos so you lose some of the quality anyway.
