I read up recently on the history of the fall of the roman empire and it was fascinating how eerily similar it was to the current state of the US. Overwhelmed by corruption and wars they make stupider and stupider decisions on ever larger scales, ever more frequently. And the population grows ever more cynical, eventually opting for authoritarianism before eventually the center can't hold any more and it all collapse…

It is important to keep the main issue clear. Failing to invest in renewables is an existential risk to humanity's future. Permanently shutting all Datacenters (not just AI) saves us about 1 year.
I believe you may be basing your figure on current Data Center power consumption. But - it's estimately to grow significantly: https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/doe-data-centers-... also - 1 year is a lot, if we actually act diligently to stave the warming crisis and to prepare for some of the effects through changes to construction & infrastructure. Still, I would agree that Data Centers are just one partic…

Plus they are building coal plants as backups for when other sources fail.
That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, coal plants take at least 10 hours (but can take up to 48 hours) to start, warm up and synchronise from cold. That’s why hydro, gas, and increasingly large batteries are generally used for peaking.

His "AI" company is about weaponizing deepfakes. This guy is nuts and should be banned from HN.
this seem disingenuous, seems like his company just is the natural evolution of companies having phising attack simulation training.

What "world order" is this? One where cheap energy generation is seen as a good thing? Bizarre that anyone would be against a private company building solar or wind farms in this day and age. For a guy in the ai and cybersecurity industry you seem to have incredibly poor judgement Gyan.
As for my “poor judgment,” kind sir .. this is not true .. see, what i like about startups (which is also how i found HN) .. is that there is no place to hide .. your judgement will either kill you or make you fabilously rich (this is even more true when all your startups are boot strapped, with no sales team .. and you end up exiting 3 times ..another way to look at it SK is that in my world, if mess up my judgement, i dont get to eat .. curious what you do for a living ?

Provide one example where solar and / or wind generation have penetrated a market to a level worth mentioning and electricity prices have come down or remained stable adjusted for inflation.
We could collectively provide a long list of examples across several US states, Europe, and Australia. Is that going to change the minds of people who don't believe it? It will not, the discussion is irrelevant and wasted energy (mental models are rigid, people are irrational and emotion driven broadly speaking), all that matters is the economics. My guy, your account is nearly 10 years old, but your karma is only 36, and you are active on here... there is a reason. You are derisive, and abrasive, and your comments (specifically the ones that get downvoted to hell) are low-effort, and "troll-y". You seem like you've been successful in life, you didn't get that way being low-effort, so let's apply that level of effort toward this community that has brought so m…
I can be abrasive .. but Id rather own my words including the unpopular ones .. than hide behind a pseudonym or tailor them for approval ..
either way .. you seem like a good human. respect!

I don't think "manipulating" is valid. A bit over a third voted one way, a bit under a third voted another, and a third didn't vote. The third that didn't vote was saying "sure, whatever".
Sure buddy. None of those changes to voting are "manipulating". Counties that used to need federal preclearance closing 1,688 polling places once the Supreme Court said they didn't have to ask permission anymore is "just good fiscal sense". North Carolina's legislature pulling data on which voting methods black people disproportionately used, then writing a bill restricting exactly those methods, is "election integri…

Is all of their energy consumption met by domestic production?
No, Germany imports massive amounts of fossil fuels. Renewables and electrification help reduce that. Electricity-wise Germany is a net exporter again
Its funny that the term "net exporter" is about the volume of energy, not the value of energy.

Yes, in the Wilamette Valley the indigenous folks maintained Gary Oaks and prevented other trees from growing there. This was open oak savannah, and when the settlers came in they took the land and turned it to agricultural land. What they couldn't plant on, they ignored, and other tree species moved in to land that was previously managed to grow Gary oaks. I'm a PNW native, you don't need to tell me about the small…
> Yes, in the Wilamette Valley the indigenous folks maintained Gary Oaks and prevented other trees from growing there. Yes, and that's a fancy way of saying "used periodic burns" to remove the vegetation to make the land more hospitable for grazers. Meaning more animals to hunt, this was arguably a form of agriculture and also served to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires. > I'm a PNW native, you don't need to…
