Oracle, the law firm with a tech business attached, probably wants to retain the option to sue other people for AI-washing their proprietary code, and that doesn't work if they're also publicly accepting AI contributions to their code with no apparent concern for the provenance of it. The tech business would probably tell them this isn't going to be a needle they are going to be able to successfully thread, but the l…

Legal departments are ironically very much like LLMs. They are trained on a narrow set of data and don't really understand the real world. If you let them run wild with no supervision they'll turn your company into slop. Someone needs to be there to reign them in, asking the all-important questions like "is suing all of our customers and making them angry REALLY the best option?" (to which they will reply, "You're ri…

Replacing legal departments with LLMs is probably the best use-case for LLMs.

Using LLMs for coding is a waste of time and a dead end, however using LLMs for legal stuff would make the world a better place.

You've clearly never purchased enterprise software at scale before. Oracle doesn't do anything that everyone else isn't already doing. Dinners, drinks, bottles of scotch, tickets to baseball and football games, plane tickets to attend training sessions in conference rooms attached to nice beachside hotels, business lunches at strip clubs, Superbowl tickets, cruise tickets, wristwatches... Not to mention mugs, tshirts…

I'm calling my senators and house rep. Holy crap.

Not sure why you're surprised. That's just how business/networking/capitalism works everywhere on earth and it's been like that since the dawn of civilization. And why would Congress stop is since they're all getting the same benefits and don't even hide it?

Because my boss like golf courses and even more when oracle sales rep pays.

Wait, Oracle sales reps give decision-makers personal kickbacks for buying Oracle?? Stay classy Oracle. Such a banal depth of evil. Why hasn't this been outlawed? I guess companies that knowingly employ such managers deserve to lose whatever Oracle's legal team extracts out of them.

They've been charged multiple times for bribing foreign government officials.

This is why corporate procurement in a large enterprise is so bureaucratic. If you have 20 layers of approval that's 20 people that need cocaine and prostitutes yet could blow the whistle.

There is a scene in a French documentary in which a former Dassault boss displays his vintage wine collection as one of his many tools to ease arms supply deals with various nations. When the journalist asked him if it really works like this he responded, “Of course, because men are pigs!”

I guess I thought integrity was still at least considered an ideal to strive for in the West.

your argument is basically: the industry is moving to it so we should get on board or be left behind it would be more convincing if you had concrete examples of technical merit and quality/speed improvements that worked for you or your team that justify going all-in

That is, indeed, my argument. As much as I’ve been loving coding since the past 20+ years, basically from my childhood, I currently do it mostly for living and some side projects. I don’t care about code quality in my side projects, and at work… well, I want to keep getting raises, be employable, and support myself. Priorities.

I don't understand the quality criticism. My 2026 professional code has much better quality than my 2025 code. Better algos, better performance, better comments, less bugs, better and more tests, better documentation, etc. What do people do with LLMs to get crap out of it ? Unless I let the agent run an entire monstruous plan and never review anything and never steer, I can never get output that could be described as slop. Bonus point: even after 25 years, I learn a lot with them, just because of their search capabilities applied to a context.

nobody has ever been fired for using Oracle

I'd fire someone for using Oracle. I'd put it in the employee handbook. I bet Oxide would too.

Oracle products (including VirtualBox and MySQL) are banned in our workplace as well. We do not want to deal with licensing nightmares because someone accidentally downloaded the JDK or the E1000 drivers for VBox.

While the Oracle hate boils, Zig, Rust,... aren't much different. There is also the approach of Microsoft putting AI all over the place on .NET, and CoPilot driven development all over the place.

The Oracle antipathy is less about the policy itself and more about the apparent hypocrisy of hyping and funding these tools as "solving programming" and then forbidding their use on their own open source project.

You mean like Microsoft also putting a break on their AI usage, which was going crazy?

This is purely because you can't copyright the output of AI, and therefore cannot assign copyright to Oracle, and therefore it's harder for them to sue you . That's it, it has nothing to do with quality. They will happily merge AI generated code as long as you wink wink claim it's not AI generated and sign over the rights.

Our company has a strict gift giving and no-bribes policy. Everyone needs to sign that they have read it. It is even more extensive for the sales/procurement teams.
