Why would the data center operators pay extra taxes to your city when they can just build them somewhere else that gives them a tax break instead?

I don't understand what you're trying to say - you're describing a win-win.

Pay the citizens the price, or don't burden them in the first place. There are two options, and the data center builders may pick either.

Prison is where we put people who have broken laws. A zoo is primarily where we put animals who are incapable of surviving in the wild. You're saying it's ok to torture humans with something that's unacceptable for zoo animals provided they broke some laws. That's the part I'm taking issue with.

Sorry to be snide - you can certainly make an argument that the demands of AI should not affect public perception of data centers, but you should simply make that argument, rather than mysteriously omitting any reference to the issue.

Climate-wise I presume. Spain sits on a similar latitude to Connecticut, and much of the EU sits north of the US population.

No it was the Freeway Revolt

I don't know that those timelines make sense; there were highways going through San Francisco... until the Loma Prieta earthquake; and then suddenly not. A cursory look at what Freeway Revolt was, seems to point to a movement in the 1950-1960's, rather than the early 1990's.

I bet you heard about the Maine datacenter moratorium that passed our state legislature. It generated tons of conversation here on HN. Did you also hear that our Democrat governor vetoed it, and it did not become law? How many of these moratoriums are actually getting…

New York also enacted a moratorium, and in recent days Texas stopped any new data center from being connected to the grid (the Texas one was done through the governor’s power over the grid).

You don't need to block the airway. Air and sound move differently, so you absorb on paths that sounds likes to travel and minimize obstruction on the air path. Something akin to a Tesla valve. I'm willing to bet that you can make the exhaust noise near inaudible if you want to. Problem is, it costs a couple 10k dollars or so, and why pay for that if you can just fuck over the neighbour instead?

Tesla valve noise cancellers are not a thing that exists. Why don't you go and invent them before telling the rest of us we should just buy them for $200 each?

You're missing the point. Towns come out ahead when the people living there come out ahead. I'm not arguing with your math, but your math is also a straight line to a town with no people at all being better. Towns are for _people_.

Where do you get the premise that the people living there don't come out ahead?

You have something which, if it moves in, would pay more in property that than it consumes in services. Even at a significant discount to the ordinary property tax rate. If the net benefit after the discount is +$1M/year to the local coffers then the local people are benefiting in that amount, and it's easy to see numbers like that even after offering significant tax incentives.
