There is no way this would be "the best" or even a good thing at all, any time before we have the US equivalent of the GDPR that keeps every company from simply demanding full ID, laws prohibiting the sale of locked down computing devices where privileged keys are installed by the manufacturer (ie ban remote attestation that's capable computational disenfranchisement), and a culture of respecting privacy so that such requirements would be unthinkable to apply to Internet connections, P2P communications, and the like.

As things stand, the only sensible way to keep kids off of social media, porn, etc is client side filtering and controls. It would be straightforward to write legislation that requires device manufacturers to make parental control settings available in the setup stage, and require websites over a certain number of users to publish content labels asserting suitability for people under 18, 13, etc. Every other approach is a backdoor mandate for identity verification, dishonestly cloaked as "age verification" for "protecting the children". And I say this as a parent who will be staring down the digital heroin industry in a few short years.

So wait, you're looking forward to the Grump catastrophe being over, not to have a break from an overtly malevolent government that actively hates our civil liberties, not so we can rebuild our burnt out husks of societal institutions, but rather as an opportunity to implement stronger and more frequent ID checks on individuals ? This both sides authoritarian ratchet dynamic is a large part of why the destructionists wanted to burn it all down in the first place!

No, I'm looking forward to the opportunity to once again invest in and protect public goods that benefit us all broadly, without an opinion on implementing age verification as a capability in the login.gov idp.

Yeah, you need it to register, but you emphatically do not to submit a ballot, which is the part that actually matters.

Yeah, you need it to register, but you emphatically do not to submit a ballot, which is the part that actually matters.

You can’t get a ballot to submit without registering, so I don’t see the big deal.

You can literally walk into any voting location where you know the name of a voter, and vote in their name. There is no check.

How do I know this? Because every time I have ever voted in NYC, I have walked into the location, given them my name, and voted. There is no check.

This is not some complex security flaw that requires great ingenuity to exploit.

Nothing. If the next person comes in to vote after you (which is easy enough to avoid if you use active voter lists), they might issue a provisional ballot. How do they know which voter is lying? They don’t check ID, and the other ballot isn’t associated with a name.

You have to be completely ideologically blinkered not to see a problem here.
