The reason the US can’t take the strait is that the war is unpopular and the American people don’t want it to happen. The US military could absolutely 100% invade and take the street, but it would be extremely unpopular and very expensive.

It is public opinion that is keeping the US from using boots on the ground.

> We should have plenty of precision missiles left today because they should have been used only to clear the way for runs with "dumb" bombs. That's what the US tried to do. The problem is that they were unable to degrade the Iranian missile systems enough that they could drop gravity bombs with impunity. This also means that they had to pull the aircraft that they would use to do bombing runs back to bases in Jordan…

China, in it's modern incarnation, and every living member of it's military, has never seen a single real battle. Nothing. No one has any rank that has bearing on any kind of combat. Just decades of self-congratulatory war games. China has tons of weapons and resources. But it would remain to be seen if they can actually fight when every single person along the entire chain is a total day one rookie.

This is a big deal for infantry forces but I suspect rather less for air and missile forces. If anything, US pilots might be unequipped psychologically to deal with anything newer than 50yo MiGs.

Good point, but China's generals were trained by generals with experience in a proper war, which is not nothing. Specifically, Beijing sent 3 million Chinese soldiers to assist Pyongyang in evicting the US Army and its allies from North Korea.

An invasion of Taiwan would entail a large naval component, though, and China really has zero experience in naval warfare even if you accept my assertion that there would be some value in having admirals trained by admirals trained by admirals with experience in a proper war.

As much as I support Taiwan, there's no realistic timeline where the US goes to war against the PRC over Taiwan. None.

A timeline in which AI is everything Amodei and Altman say it is and intel is still stuck in an older node while tsmc has the good gaafet stuff on could be one where it's worth fighting for taiwan. Also, if the US doesn't fight for taiwan, will they fight for the phillipines? Malasia? South korea?

if the US can't even spell Malaysia, I doubt they have interest fighting for them

Not an American but live here. But I don’t understand the fixation of US in middle east theatre. With the abundance of onshore oil through fracking revolution, presumably US doesn’t need to police the Middle East. The president himself said US doesn’t need their oil. So what is this conflict all about? Is there bigger geopolitical price tag attached to victory in Iran? Or US is just besieged by corruption to the exte…

There are not that many democracies in the Middle East. The US is allied with almost all of them. Would you prefer democracy be delivered to those countries by force? If not, then accept the lesser evil.

It's fine if you either stick to your principles or play a game of shameless realpolitik. Just don't pretend you can convince us that you are actually doing the former when all we see is you doing the later. We are not retarded. You are the retard for thinking we will fall for your rhetorics.

Realpolitik is shameless, that's kind of the whole deal. It's still how this stuff works. The US doesn't care about democracy because it's good for people in other countries, the US cares because it's good for the US.

US has no problem protecting despotic autocracies like the Pinochet's junta in Chile or Saudi Arabian theocratic monarchy (a birthplace of islamic wahhabism). No, it is not false. Geopolitics is about lesser evils and raw needs, not perfect ideological consistency. Any country stupid enough to care about that would not last very lon…

Quick guess without looking it up: for how many decades were we protecting liberal democracy in Korea and Taiwan before they had their first free elections?

Air superiority was established fairly early on in the conflict. Flying F-15 and F-16s now. Not even stealth and they drop more than just missles - they carry bombs. B-52s weren’t sent in to carpet bomb the area of that’s what you mean. US could indiscriminately drop dumb bombs but you would have a higher civilian casualty rate.

This is hilarious. Yeah. Air superiority. Last I heard they moved all their equipments to Jordan to stay out of range from Sijjeel and they are still getting hammered in Jordan. Saw the video taken by the US service men. In movies you see US soldiers yelling "go go go" while in the battlefield we saw them scream "run run run". Your confidence in claiming air superiority is commendable. Keep it up.

I don’t think you understand meaning behind air superiority.
