Judging by other comments, this hypothetical Scam Store sounds very much like trying to buy Minecraft from Microsoft already.

Minecraft is kinda owned once you have it. You can play offline forever, or even on offline-mode servers. What sucks is they killed a lot of paid accounts in the Mojang acquisition, so no more online-mode servers for them.

It is strange to me that people are re-discovering this today, in 2026. Microsoft has always been half-baked, even in the 80s and 90s. Heck, my parents basically raised me (20+ years ago) by running a business fixing problems with Microsoft products for their clients.

I remember windows 2000 being pretty rock solid. I used it as my gaming os for years while folks struggled with windows me and windows xp (IIRC, xp did eventually become pretty good)

That was the pinnacle of Microsoft Windows. I’d say mid 80s to late 90s when they focused on the P in PC. After that they went full enterprise mode.

Can you explain this to me? I think it's far more 2000s, when we were having debates about whether software engineers were actually engineers, with professional responsibility, or not.

I don't think they're talking about the debate itself, but maybe about the software job market of the 2010s. Back then, software engineers were more scarce and valuable than today, hypothetically giving them much more leverage to say 'no' to bad orders. Nowadays, many people are just trying to stay under the radar and remain employed.

I moved to New Zealand from the US recently, and the tech industry here is mostly on .NET and Azure. My coworkers keep looking at me like I'm a moron because I've always deployed to AWS via Jenkins and don't know their weird homebrew system to deploy things to our on prem windows servers.
