To cancel someone was really popular for a couple years starting just after covid. I would say that "cancelling" is mostly organized groups of people publicly shaming and harassing third parties to get to their victim. So like demanding that his employer fires him, demanding that any sponsors cancel their contracts, showing up with a mob outside their home to kill their family, demanding that they get removed from platforms like YouTube or Facebook.

I don't think it signifies any of those things. This is all new stuff. Some people have decided to offload image-creation to machines because what they care about is the text. This stuff you say it signifies, it says more about you than them.

If you don't care about the images then don't have images.

If I do it, I make sure it's a good image, not just slop that I prompt and paste in, because I can. And on rare occasions when I do, it's on my own gaming system with Stable Diffusion so I can have as many takes as I like, fairly quickly.

Never do it because you can - that is a no-effort thing.

Are you saying nobody should ever do anything with any tool if they cannot reasonably do it without the tool?

I mean personal blogs I agree the writing portion should be personal but does that go for everything? Maybe the author should take the emoji off his page(??!!)

Just like published books were considered a symbol of effort that no one would have considered a blog as being anywhere near. When was the last time you looked up a book to find an answer to your question? That USED to be the normal.

Then we just googled for a link to Stack Overflow. And the oldtimers waxed lyrical on Slashdot, bemoaning the loss of craftsmanship, and how it was too easy nowadays - no effort.

What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.

The likely next normal will be agent-scraped content that it summarizes and tailors to its human. Slop, lacking real content, will be dutifully skipped by the agent, and the human won't care.

Meanwhile, armies of advertisers will cry foul, and scramble for a new way to get in front of human eyeballs.

And for those who want to continue reading blogs for pleasure, it's one agent pre-screen away.

"the kids" it's mostly boomers falling for this and being obsessed with it

"the kids" are the ones who can spot AI slop pretty easily from what I know

Writing a blog post is a creative effort, selecting a few pieces (generated or not) is creative, too, whether it is up to your standards are not. The gatekeeping on this is crazy. I really wonder how artists discussed photography and other advances.

The key there is you still notice it. The format is less important then the fact that there's enough signal there telling you "something is wrong".
