You mention hotels but I can’t imagine a hotel not wanting my actual real passport. Same with visa (also mentioned on your site) — how would a partial or redacted passport ever be ok?
What does this actually achieve? Is the goal to prevent sharing of info that would allow your ID to be copied?

The idea is redacting for when you need to send your IDs primarily online; caring about your privacy and avoiding copies, indeed.
You could always do online check-in in the hotel, showing the needed info only, and when showing up physically you simply show it fully to the receptionist, for instance.
As someone who cares about data protection; I want to believe I should not accept the fact that all our data is still online available for bad actors; for which I still find necessary tools that make this endeavor easier.

I like the goal and don't like sharing my ID online. I'm simply not sure how this would work - suppose I need to send my passport somewhere (such as an online visa application), what expectation is there that the visa office would accept a redacted passport?
Other companies have recently started wanting ID verification; I would love to send a redacted form, but why would we expect they would accept it? Not reject it as unrecognised / invalid?
I wonder instead if you could have some kind of signature where you redact, but the redaction includes some kind of signature of the original; the redacted one is not just visual but is a signed package created by your company intended as a shareable digital ID format. Then, you'd work with various ID verification services to accept your package format.

Actually I think you're right. But I like to think it still useful for processes with no legal right to a full copy: landlord asking your ID on Whatsapp, the gym, or any other one that involves specifically an online process, precisely.
On the signed package I think that it would be awesome, but it requires tons of friction I would not be willing to get into right now. Although, makes a lot of sense.
Does this make sense?
