I never understood clubbing. After one hour standing there like an utilty pole and having spend over 100 euro for entrance and two beers or drinks I'm already tipsy enough, I'm out of cash, and I need to visit the filthy toilet. Then I realised "they are all on drugs, that's why they're enjoying it".

I went to a clubbing in my youth a few times.

If you are not into that vibe it is a lame experience. And, typically you need to enjoy their drugs to enjoy their vibe, including the music.

Funny thing is that for people that are into that vibe, your unfathomable boredom is unfathomably incomprehensible. "How are you not having fun?"

My experience was having a couple of drinks, refusing drugs, standing around while the repetitive beats annoyed me much. Then I either had a few nore drinks and fell asleep in some bench or quietly left to get on a bus to the comfort of my home.

If you don't know at least a few chemsex enthusiasts, you might be leading a pretty sheltered life. While I'm not into chemsex, it's not exactly uncommon either. Plenty of folks out there getting high and going at it because they enjoy the experience more.

> you might be leading a pretty sheltered life. Or (and stick with me here) you might be normal.

Maybe sheltered lives are normal, at least among HN users. Did I tell you about Fusion Festival yet?

I have heard this take many times. But I don’t get it. For me 80% of the experience is the music. I can easily enjoy a club for a whole night without taking any drugs if I like the bands or DJs. Choose the night/venue accoring to your music taste and then it’s just like a really long concert.

What about getting tired, both physically and sleepy? Also if everyone around you is on drugs and you are not it's either really annoying or boring AF.

Mentally tired but not physically tired is a quite good state to dance in, IMO.

London, Paris, southern Spain, Balearic. If you're a male then 100eur per night is a bargain.

maybe my take on this is weird but spending more than 5-10 on entry is a sign it’s commercial and not really gonna be fun. the more informal the better. club goers from Londons legendary decades also describe going in for a fiver to the best parties. once the commercial interests step in, it’s a crowd of people spending to be where it’s cool to be. the cool is already elsewhere. we saw this happen in real time with B…

unless it's Berlin - then an entry fee of 10-30€ is fairly normal. 70-90€ would get you quite a few drinks though, at under 10€ each even with inflation. Personally I don't drink alcohol so I pay half as much as people who do.

There are so many drugs used in wars. In addition to the standard stimulants and painkillers, some Russian soldiers in Bucha were using ED pills (viagra) in their campaign to denazify elderly people and children.

In 2014, the U.S. military distributed almost $85 million of Viagra to their ranks. More than 100,000 prescriptions to active-duty soldiers. I get what you are implying but there is usually a rational reason when armies are distributing ED medication.

Active duty sure, but were they at the front line using them?

Almost any thing humans enjoy is addictive to some people.

Not the same. A substance that literally travels into your dopamine system and modifies it is going to be more addictive than eating some sugar or playing a slot machine Bad false equivalence.

That is not true. All forms of addictive behavior are mediated by the same mechanism: the delta-FosB variant of the FosB protein.

Drugs, sex, food, gambling. All the same.

If you don't like the type of music that plays in that specific club, you won't understand the appeal. It's awesome to enjoy songs that you like with everyone singing and dancing together. I never used any drugs (including alcohol) in clubs and I always had a great time

Awful take on the matter. They’re all responsible adults until something goes wrong and they do something horrible.

mhm, just take a look at many families that were destroyed thanks to alcohol

In the specific case of alcohol you should also take a look at how many families were created due to alcohol
