I mean she passed a plan for universal basic healthcare. I'd say that's clearly left-leaning (even if a bit milquetoast). Her Abrazos, no balazos approach to crime and anti-war stances are also pretty left-leaning. I think she's clearly a left-wing figure but is moderated by trying to toe the line between US foreign policy and leftwing populism

I will preface my comment by saying I'm in no way trying to attack you personally or discredit your opinion based on your foreigner status, but she is not left-leaning. The plan for universal basic healthcare is a rehash of a program that already existed and was cancelled by her antecesor (and mentor). Abrazos, no balazos is also a policy from her ancestor which has resulted (to no avail) in the highest numbers of ki…

Thank you. Not to go against site rules and veer into meta-discussion on other posters but it strikes me as very odd that a foreigner is just repeating govt propaganda to people who live here.

Canada is only allowing a very limited number of Chinese EVs to be sold without 100% tariff markup. Mostly to put up a token resistance to Trump's advances on their sovereignty. The U.S. has already stated that none of these EVs can be exported to the continental U.S. NAFTA-be-damned. They may not even cross the border if some Congressmen have their way. So it seems logical that the next Chinese ploy is to become a m…

"Mostly to put up a token resistance to Trump's advances on their sovereignty" Canada originally imposed the 100% tariff against Chinese EVs in lockstep with the US to protect North American automakers. In return China retaliated with massive tariffs on Canadian agricultural products. Which, I mean, is 100% fair: The argument against Chinese cars -- the subsidized nonsense -- is farcical, and you could 100% claim tha…

But cars from foreign manufacturers "made" in Mexico or Canada can be exported to the U.S. per NAFTA, like everyone's doing now. The Chinese are currently building loads of EV car factories in Mexico in the hope they can export them North when this Administration ends.

Fat chance.

You can't assemble a bunch of imported parts and say it's a NAFTA car. 75% of the content of the vehicle has to come from North America. There are other limits on the minimum labour cost and steel/aluminum content.

So no, they are secretly planning to relabel a Chinese car. Nothing works like that.

Famously, she's focused a lot of her infrastructure work on expansion of rail. Including the 5.6 trillion peso Plan México and 3,000 new km of passenger train lines. She's also remodeling the Mexico City airport, modernizing and repairing 4,000 km of roads, and pushed the National Hospital Infrastructure Plan that will fund massive expansions of three major hospital systems. Also half of the infrastructure budget is…

Not to make a weak appeal to authority but have you spent much time in Mexico and much time speaking with locals? Those initiative are widely viewed as either failures, DOA, or political chips to appeal to the Morena base (which even then fails).

I have spoken to "locals" but I wouldn't call that a representative sample. She's been in power for less than 2 years so maybe let's hold off before drawing any conclusions. They may well turn out as failures but it's certainly too early to make any conclusions when there's still hundreds of groundbreaking ceremonies that haven't even happened

FWIW she's still one of the most popular leaders in all of South America

Did you even read my comment? Rail, roads, and hospitals are not "upper crust" infrastructure

Thank you for putting the burden of proof on me instead of wearing that coat yourself- like the optics guy you are. Well: Energy is 54 % of the money. Which is mostly for the industry up north. Renewables are decorative in the percentage. Rail: 15.63 % - again mostly for the norther industrial zone- and some link ups with the southern neighbours (under the guise of helping the backwards regions down there). Roads: 13…

Girl, I'm not sure where you get off when you provided as much evidence as me.

I don't see how any of your statistics reinforce your original comment. Do you believe there are not poor people in the north and they all live in the south?

I share your concern about public-private partnerships, but Sheinbaum's infrastructure framework explicitly requires strategic assets, like in energy, oil, and power, remain under public control and have majority public oversight.

Those are left-leaning only if you do not the details. Please consider that this government has a fantastic propaganda machine. For example, We already had a Universal Basic Healthcare called Seguro Popular. Which was destroyed in 2018 by this regime on a tantrum which left millions without coverage. We went from 9% uncovered to 26% uncovered. They are still trying to figure out how to fix that. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.…

Seguro Popular was a neoliberal scheme to allow private clinics to overtake public hospitals. It's ultimate goal was to move towards public-private insurance models. The opposite of a "left-leaning" policy

Besides I'm not arguing over the success or even merits of her policies. I'm simply pointing out that she's clearly and obviously seen a left-leaning candidate. I don't think that's whatsoever a controversial take. It's certainly how her party has always been seen.

Canada and Mexico are both allowing Chinese EVs in. US automaker export TAM will only decrease over time, and eventually, they will be boutique automakers serving only the US market. BYD intends to be the world's largest automaker in five years, and China currently has the capacity to produce ~25M EVs per year (~25% of global annual light vehicle sales, as of this comment). The US built ~1M EVs last year, for compari…

And Mexico acquiesced to Trump and put a 50% tariff on Chinese EVs, making them as expensive as American cars. It's mostly BYD who still sells in Mexico, and overall, Chinese EVs make 9% of new car sales.

I did not at all comment on the efficacy or even merits of her programs. I was simply pointing out that she is widely considered a leftwing politician. Obviously there are some exceptions like you but like obviously the Morena party is the leftwing party. It's the party that at least says it's gonna do leftwing things. It's the party that celebrates itself for electing the first transgender congresswoman and explicitly includes gender and sexuality commitments in its platform documents. It's the party that explicitly talks about funding social welfare. It's the party that aligns with labor unions.

You can argue whether or not they live up to those ideals but I think it's unquestionable that it's widely viewed as the leftwing party. Just like PAN is obviously conservative.

You can do a lot of flexible accounting to attain that 75% percentage. The value of the Mexican parts are exaggerated whilst the Chinese parts are valued far below cost.

no... Mexico is in north america

and if you follow Mexican politics, her politics are almost entirely a continuation of the last president who was her political mentor so it's reasonably well understood what trajectory her term is on
