Electricians, sure, but carpenters? I figured these buildings always had steel frames.

#322kind of meta that the models running in data centers can now help the tradesmen building the next data centers. full loop.
Re: A.I. companies are recruiting electricians and carpenters by the thousands
#323AI bubble is already here, watch people becoming electrician/carpenters only for the AI to go sideways, then more hundreds of such workers unemployed.
Don't follow trend, look at what happened with IT and folks leaving university now can not even land job interview. Do what you love, not what it is trending.

#324The next demand for those trades will be for war plants. For those who haven't noticed, the US/Israel/Iran war and the Ukraine/Russia war just merged. Countries currently shooting at each other: Ukraine, Russia, Iran, Israel, US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Jordan, Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait... See the lead story in the New York Times for the past two days. This war has crossed an important threshold. No pai…
You are reading too much into the current media hype cycle, and not really reading the geopolitics in place, which puts a lot of pressure internally on these countries to not escalate further. This includes both Ukraine / Russia and the middle east which you are so eager to tie together on the slightest connection.

In the case of USA/Iran the US is essentially Israel's proxy. It's up to Israel to decide when the fighting stops. OK, fine, Iran could capitulate and essentially stop being a country. They'll get right on that.
In the case of Ukraine/Russia Ukraine is a US+EU proxy. It is up to the EU leadership to decide when the fighting stops. OK, fine, Russia could capitulate and stop being a country. They'll get right on that.

#326It's nice to hear tradespeople getting paid well with lots of work. I'm happy for them :-)
Tradespeople have always been getting paid well with lots of work. Most electricians will make more than the average sysadmin, senior developer or network engineer here. The amount of people getting into trades over the past decade has dropped drastically. There is no reason a fully qualified, even residential electrician cannot make 200k a year. Electricians aren't even the highest paid trade, plumbers are.
Where are you getting this? The median plumber in the US makes just under $63k, which is below the ~$65k median pay for all jobs in the US. The median sysadmin makes over $96k - a more than 50% higher median. The top 10% bracket for sysadmins is also 50% higher than plumbers. Why are people claiming that plumbers and tradespeople are raking it in when they’re clearly not?
> The amount of people getting into trades over the past decade has dropped drastically
The BLS projections for the next decade have plumbers at 4% growth and sysadmins at -4% - in decline.

#327I would be very careful about basing your career decsions based on this trend. The data center build out will always be very boom and bust, which would really suck to work in. One year you would be making 300k working on dataceters and the next you would make 30k because thousands of electricians are now competing to build a few single family homes.
This is being driven by the plummeting cost of electricity. Mostly our inefficient and obsolete grids somewhat hide this trend. But those that have been experimenting with off grid installations or are playing early adopters by putting a lot of solar panels and batteries in/on their houses are starting to figure out that once you have these in place, the marginal cost of power is basically zero. The hardware isn't that expensive. The process of getting it installed currently is. Mainly because of the scarcity of skilled labor and the amount of bureaucratic overhead needed for permitting, certification, and the cost of the people doing that work.
But the big picture here is enormous amounts of industrial processes, domestic heating, charging infrastructure, grid infrastructure, etc. related hardware will need installing over the next decades. And most of that will involve electricians. Data centers might be a bit of a bubble. But I don't think that will go away completely and there's going to be no shortage of other stuff that also needs to be installing.

As a guy who does HVAC as a hobby, this post is hilarious, nobody should take it seriously. I can see exactly where the practical experience would be invaluable.
The way an apprenticeship works is that the apprentice does the work, then the contractor signs off on it, then the government inspector signs off on it.
This obviously makes no sense, right? If the apprentice does work that won't pass inspection then it won't pass inspection regardless of whether an existing contractor looks at it first, so no one is being protected from anything by that. If they do work that will pass inspection then what non-protectionist purpose is there in forcing them to have a competing existing contractor sign off on it before they can have it inspected for real?
In theory the competing contractor could be supervising the apprentice while they're doing the work instead of giving them some work to do and then leaving them to it while they do some other work themselves or take a long lunch, but there is nothing to enforce that happening and therefore the expectation that it reliably does is a fictional academic reality inconsistent with real incentives.

Except that gold-rush-like booms tend to attract individuals who are more risk-taking and entrepreneurial. So of course there will still be losses in a downturn, but this is a self-selected group with greater adaptability, more likely to mix and match skills and still end up better off than if they had not participated at all...

> In what way?
Presumably they are referencing Ukraine recently shooting an Iranian (i believe) merchant ship.
However its kind of silly to say the wars have merged based on a single incident. We dont even know if it was intentional.
