I genuinely can’t tell - you’re aware that this is a standardized form factor, and they didn’t invent this just for this particular device, right?

Why do you think it's surprising when people actually expect high end devices to be designed for usability?

I don't think anybody wants to cut a separate hole in their countertop for controls when everyone already has one big rectangular hole where a cooktop goes.

Then you think wrong. But the best place to cut another hole would be the top front cover, which can't be used for anything else anyway because the stove is behind it.

The second floor of the mall exploded for some reason, and the roof collapse is secondary to that. It seems to have happened after the earthquake and subsequent evacuation. There are videos of people leaving the mall: https://x.com/yuto4388/status/2082060992377475247/video/1?s=...

It is due to a gas leak that caused an explosion.

It definitely wasn't known at the time I wrote my comment, and as far as I know right now, they haven't announced the cause.

Few things would create an explosion of this size, so it's a logical inference, but you never know.

At the plastics plant I worked at in the 2010's, they had seismic emergency valves for the natural gas. At the time, I thought they were such a pain, as the vibration caused by a semi-trailer bumping a warehouse dock could cause them to shut off. It looks like the building used LP Gas from a tank, and the was an automatic shutoff valve at the tank end and in each individual shop in the food court, but that still leaves all the pressurized gas in the large piping from the tank to the inside of the building.

Kumamoto is barely finished rebuilding from the last quake, you can still see cracks in structures as you drive down the road. This is really horrible; not to mention the city is already beginning to depopulate as the youth move north to Fukuoka.

It's my understanding that small to medium sized cities (and rural areas) depopulating is going on now throughout almost all of Japan. If you're willing to move to depopulating areas houses cost a little kinda everywhere.

In Puglia, Italy, in my in laws village (8'000 people), you can buy a freshly renovated, rather huge house for 50k, and you can likely find livable ones, not renovated at the 10-15k.

In US, in many rural areas you can buy a whole home in good conditions at the 50k mark.

Japan follows the same trend, and yes, I've traveled Japan some, there's plenty of almost-ghost towns nowadays where you can buy real estate for pennies as well.

Yeah it's crazy to me, especially in earthquake-prone places like Japan or California. I bought a house here in Japan last year and replaced the gas with all-electric due to concerns of not only leaks and disasters but also just in day-to-day use gas isn't good for indoor air quality.

The one place gas makes sense is heating in cold climates because furnaces are externally vented.

Even that is doubtful. Heat pumps are so much more efficient than combustion that it is basically a no-brainer. You're looking at "winter at McMurdo Station" weather before furnaces become a must.

... but this was already the case before induction cooking?

There's no getting around Ohm's Law, so any serious consumer is going to have its own transformer to avoid either having massive last-mile losses or insanely thick cables. A large shopping mall will already have multiple transformer stations (and the associated 10kV cabling) to power all the lighting, advertising displays, air conditioning, and so on. Adding induction cooking to that is almost a rounding error.

I agree there's a huge amount of energy that would need to go into a commercial kitchen to replace gas, and I also agree its probably a bit unfeasible at a lot of locations with current technology to do it at any reasonable scale and have it be economically efficient. However, you're not really being honest by suggesting things have to either be 110VAC or 5,000V. Even residentially, an electric range isn't often goin…

It's about the same for an EU grid: 10ish kV to a step-down transformer for the mall, then three-phase at 400V phase-to-phase / 230V phase-to-neutral all the way to the range.

It is quite common to see 125A CeeForm around large buildings here for temporary installations, and those give you 86kW of power. Supplying a fraction of that for a hard-wired range really isn't a problem.

It started as a Twitter account during the Tohoku 2011 earthquake, and then subsequently became a “real” service; the IP owners for the Eva agreed to let them use it going forward.

I really love hearing/learning about this! Imagine "The Mickey Mouse Earthquake Alarm" vs. "Yeah, NERV-Alerts, nbd..."

I never watched much anime, but an old college roommate put me through Neon Genesis Evangelion and it holds a special place in my heart. :-)
