One step at a time. Until then, you can use Murena or GrapheneOS.

AfAIK wero needs Google Play Integrity. So you are still stuck with Google. When that are said. I 100% agree with you - one step at a time. I think Wero will no longer depend on that in 3–5 years. It's just real challenges that the European banking system needs to figure out. The EU works slow, but it does move :) Kind of like the Ents in LOTR

Wero has no such requirement. The bank that you use to interoperate with Wero might require Google Play Integrity though.

Europeans are anti American nowadays.

Well no. We were just reminded (pretty directly and rudely, I might add) that USA is not always on our side. Nothing wrong with being independent and able to stand on our own feet. Which in turn will benefit USA too, assuming we stay allies.

Thanks for the correction

> I think this will be a much bigger threat to Visa and Mastercard than the oft-promised digital Euro Wasn't the digital Euro specifically crippled due to banks lobbying against it to promote Wero instead?

I haven't heard of crippling d. euro, but wero is specifically built by European banks, to try to corner the market before d. euro comes. That said, I wouldn't be surprised regarding lobbying.

AFAIK they lobbied to limit the maximum amount of digital Euro one may hold pretty severely

Country availability is a policy set up by the app publisher, not a Google policy

Which is complete bullshit with the Euro having been specifically invented to be used across the EU. I had a similar moment of stupidifiedment trying to park in Germany with a phone set to Dutch region. Euro in cash works everywhere Euros are accepted but apps on the freaking Internet? Nah, gotta restrict that to the publisher country only.

I mean, there's some reason for it as EU countries have different laws and regulations, but yes, it's a dumb choice on the publisher's part

Why do you need 3rd party app and middle man to show you QR code for instant SEPA payment?

All Decathlon had to do was show QR code with payment details which you will scan with ANY APP you prefer to use (most likely your bank app you have already or if not like me, you can use other ways).

This doesn't seem like progress at all, quite the opposite, just force all the shops show you QR code for SEPA payment without this 3rd party nonsense and pay with whatever (bank) app you prefer based on payment details in QR code.

This is supported by ANY OS, heck for what's worth you can scan code with QR reader in browser and use online banking in desktop mode to pay with whatever phone you use. Replacing US Visa and Mastercard companies with US Google and Apple companies doesn't seem like any improvement at all to me, it's actually worse since it is easier to get/use bank card than phone for small kids/seniors.

Well 2 weeks ago I have managed to send and received a wero transaction from my /e/Os without Google play. Someone is wrong here

Wow. Interesting. Do you know how that was done? The latest I heard about an alternative to Google play services was https://www.heise.de/en/news/Paying-without-Google-New-conso... If you where able to send and receive I was obviously wrong. I'm very glad but also confused.

We have not used the wero app directly but my bank app which does not require Google play but has integrated the use of wero to send or receive money from or to bank accounts. My bank is LCL in France

I need to use this thread to mention the Polish payment system Blik. It is one of the most convenient payment systems out there - you generate an ephemeral 6-digit code in your banking app, copy it to the vendor, confirm, done. Works P2P with phone numbers, too. Interestingly, it would be the perfect system for payments using AI agents - the agent tries to pay, asks user to provide 6-digit code, submits payment reque…

Blik is convenient for making transactions through phone calls. Stores have payment terminals that accept blik codes, I just shared the code to the cashier while ordering flowers from abroad and accepted the transactions in my bank app on my phone.

> they've decided to take a "mobile-first" approach for now That's hardly a confirmation that it will never be possible ("for now"). It seems like a fair tradeoff for a launch when almost everyone has a smartphone and that's already enforced like that for many parts of life (I'm not saying it's great, but it's a valid tradeoff when alternative options exist) like banking or public transport where the happy path often…

You'd think that basic infrastructure such as payment systems had higher standards than just "most" people having access to it. It's fine as long as we have alternatives, but if online shops were to start to phase out SEPA payments in favor of Wero and Wero-only shops were to start popping it, it would be a real problem. Btw the solution already exists: It's still relatively small scale but GNU Taler is live in Switz…

It's a system which is currently barely live in 5 countries out of 27 EU countries. In most of them Give it some time to mature before writing it off.
