Outside of the small probability that this may assist us in the future, has looking beyond our moon ever benefitted or even affected humanity in any way?

Monitoring "space weather" (paying attention to the sun/solar flares/CMEs etc) is important to keeping our earth orbiting satellites functioning. (That's without getting into what a modern "carrington event" would look like.)

About time!, I cant wait till we start putting large hardware on the dark side of the moon. That will make JST look like a toy.

The radio silence which makes the far side so attractive will also present our most significant challenge in communicating with that hardware.

Where is the rule that says a star can't also be a planet?

As far as I'm concerned, CD-35 2722 B can self identify however they want.

If they want to identify as a planet, however, they can claim the almost unique distinction of having a gas giant as their moon. I wonder if the gas giant itself has their own small rocky and potentially habitable moons.

Literally not a moon, that headline is ridiculous (not posters fault) but Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope WILL find Earth-sized exoplanets and even REAL moons I am stupid-excited to see it launched/first-light in my remaining lifetime (Musk better not screw it up) For perspective on the technology, JWST "only" has 28mbps downlink NGR has 500mbps downlink , that's right 1.5 TERABYTES PER DAY download speed all from…

I find Earth-sized exomoons quite exciting. Imagine the civilizations that can develop around those.

By the time we have a radio telescope on the far side of the Moon, I assume we can just lay a couple hundred kilometers of fiber to the nearest settlement. The border of the disk, from Earth's perspective, is prime scientific real estate - the border of the area that's always visible is not too far from the area that's never visible (and, therefore, shadowed from our radio noise).

Maintenance crews can do quick hops to the telescope, while their offices are always in contact with Earth.

The far side of the moon is no more or less dark than the side we see.

Sorry my dark side comment was not in reference to the light or darkness of the moon it was in reference to the more "radio silenced" aspect of it. But just a solid platform for building a ultra large scale machine would be a start off planet. I am stoked about the discoveries JWST has driven with its jump in res and reach!
