I’m less excited about Hurd than I once was, because now there’s interesting alternatives with good momentum (Redox and Genode in particular). But I’m glad it’s still moving along; it seems to be the only steadily maturing C project with this kind of approach.

It may be silly to write a more secure OS in C, but I think it’s important to preserve the C lineage over time, even if it’s not at the forefront.

Hurd is still alive!!! (well, kind of) So sad this project never got enough traction to accelerate its development pace. Maybe AI assistance will change that...

Only half tongue-in-cheek, but they would only accept contributions from GNU licensed models.

Linux is not an official GNU project. You can tell because GNU created their own soft fork, Linux-libre, to cut out any blobs or nonfree bits (mostly firmware AIUI). HURD is a GNU project outright. Although, ironically, I'm pretty sure its microkernel nature means it'd be a lot easier to maintain a proprietary driver for HURD than Linux. Life is strange sometimes.

I'm interested in HURD because Debian/HURD and Gentoo/HURD exist. If/when we ever get distros supporting redox/genode/whatever I'll become very interested in those.
