It's a copy/paste of the arguments against open source software from decades ago. The argument goes: innovation requires profit motive, and profit motive requires IP rights. Of course, this was soundly disproven in software and I don't see any reason it should be different here.

The difference might be the immense cost of physical infrastructure needed for AI training. People would make open source contributions for free, TSMC, NVIDIA and power companies seems less likely to make free contributions to AI.

Human in the loop is infeasible in comms denied areas which is what we have in Ukraine/Russia right now. It's why Ukraine and Russia are now using fully autonomous drones. That's the only real solution to jamming.

No, they are using long optical cables attached to drones. The battlefield looks like a giant spider web afterwards.

anthropic's models would also be useless in a jammed environment though

and the only way to use them would be to blow up A100s

I think Meta would love nothing more than to throw a very large wrench into the works of OpenAI/Anthropic. Open models could mean one or both go bankrupt which is good for them.

Nvidia sells the hardware.

Microsoft sells the hosting.
