If this, or the vibe-coding ban upsets you, you're not the target demographic of Codeberg. It's not a big tent project looking to host all the code in the word, like Github is. It's for principled, quality, open source, community-first software. Look at the explore page to see what that means: https://codeberg.org/explore/repos?q=&only_show_relevant=tru...

The entire point of Forgejo, the git forge that Codeberg runs on as well, is that you can run your own very easily. I've stopped having private repos on Github completely in favor of my own Forgejo instance, and it's way smoother and nicer. Codeberg was never meant for private repos, but if I get around to starting a new floss project that I want to put out there, Codeberg would be a great option!

And sure, right now there is no cross-forge collaboration, so you need to have multiple accounts. But forge federation is planned, eventually you should be able to contribute to your friend's project from your instance. If you don't wanna wait, go look at https://tangled.org/ or something.

If they are now the latter, they should start by clearly stating that ideology so users can make an informed decision on whether Codeberg is the right place for them. Well, they kinda do? Go on the main page, it's the second line of text: "Codeberg is a non-pr…

"community led" != "ideology". That's a statement of governance style, which is a different level.

In the words of the person who announced the ban, when moderating a discussion on it 8 months prior:[1] > > Dear Codeberg, please push out and ban these political fighters. > This is not a neutral space, Codeberg is political. If you disagree with someone, be constructive and don't call them merely political and think that's a reason for the discussion to stop. the maintainers of Codeberg do not believe that they are…

How do you know what the politics will be next? They banned vibe coded projects too… goodness knows how they think they can determine / enforce that.

This is why I don't use Mastodon. What you can see is completely reliant on what kind of politics the admin supports at that time.

I'm not personally a fan of this move or the vibe coding rule. That being said, I genuinely wonder how many people complaining about the rule are personally affected. Seems weird to me to complain about a service setting its own rules when you don't engage with it or contribute to it.

It's HN. They like to think they are better than reddit, but in the end this site is a huge echo box, and any outlier causes these reactions, particularly when it's something or someone taking a moral/ethical stance

It feels like a sizeable chunk of this website's user base gets triggered when anyone takes any stance at all.

How do you define "slop" ?

the same way United States Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart defined porn in Jacobellis v. Ohio, you know it when you see it

Sloppy and low effort reply. Claude does a better job. I'd paste the output but it's against the rules on HN.

You can find it on lobsters though, where I did post the full reply along with the prompt in response to the exact same cop out. To this day, it's still the only coherent definition of "slop" in the entire 300+ comment thread I posted it in. Not bad for a clanker, huh?

Seems fine to me. It’s just a Bluesky version of GitHub. That was always going to do various odd bans.

https://tangled.org/ is the "Bluesky version of GitHub"

To me that means that there will be less moderation than on Codeberg, the "Mastodon version of GitHub"

Yes it's called the general assembly of codeberg eV (the non-profit). Members can vote, they have the power.

That's it. I'm leaving Codeberg. Feels like if European Union was turned into a code forge.

I'd argue that it's more democratic than the EU, and has a target audience of members who actually want the service to continue going in this direction. You most likely wont be missed. Thankfully there are a million other places to host your code.

I think you're misunderstanding "codeberg is political". Everything is political, FOSS is political, GitHub is also political. When people say "We're not political", or "That's not political". What they're actually saying is that it's within my own politics.

Not every question is political, so it's often fine to say "that's not a political question".

But which questions are apolitical questions, is itself a political question.

My code repository should host my code, not go on dubious moral crusades. Glad I stayed on Github. Their ban on nebulously defined vibecoded projects is even more ridiculous.

It's not ridiculous. If it was for me, i would ban anyone who use LLMs at all, so banning projects that « mostly consist of code written by "generative AI"-tools » sounds very light to me, a reasonable middle-ground to rally everyone around.

Are you sure you don't feel insulted and threatened because you're yourself a sloperator, so it feels personal to have others criticize your practices from a moral standpoint? (i don't know, i haven't researched your profile)
