> trustworthy search makes a huge difference That's the rub. Today on the internet, no one can validate that there exists any "trustworthy search". If we don't control the servers and validate the software on it, then we are taking someone's word for it. Most often that someone is a marketing person at the hosting organization. Occasionally it's a random comment on the internet behind a pseudonym we know nothing abou…

The entire point of the Constitution was to not trust each other. We wouldn't even need checks or balances if trust were a reasonable governing philosophy. Nor a Bill of Rights, nor any explicit admonition against slavery.

The reason we need these and many more is that we don't trust each other. And it's wise that we don't.

This doesn't mean trust is bad, only that the founders, rightfully, knew that it leads to complacency.

What's landed us where we are is not a lack of trust. (We've lacked trust from day one, that's how we got the Constitution in the first place). What's landed us here is complacency.

at the level of Google? Like you are underestimating how massive google is when it comes to ads. It is not that easy to just be at the level of google in advertising even if you are oai

but google sucks, its a terrible product thanks to its ads. Internet is terrible without adblockers. Now chatgpt can add some subtle ads in their apps and they have enough users for companies to spend money on it.

You are speaking from the point of view of an engineer I am guessing or a consumer. If you work in marketing or advertising, you will see things differently and why google and meta to a certain extent are giants. Yes, Chatgpt can subtlely influence people but what matters more is how much roi you get on your spend if you are a marketing agency. You might run experiments and figure out how OAI ads will work but there is no way you will put up significant spend on GEO. In fact, most likely OAI will go some other mechanism than subtle nudge or influence because that will be godly more expensive and also extremely unethical. You are more like to see some sponsored links on each prompt or some crap like that where its easy to measure roi. But even then chatgpt footprint is tiny compared to Google to the point where it is a bit ridiculous to say they can just be like google with ads soon

This is what happened with YouTube for instance

They're still in the stage of trying to get uptake on the sub. Ads come later. When they've got sufficient uptake, they'll start to add different sub levels.

It's distrust - in foreigners, in each other - that got extremists elected, and it's distrust - in the media, in the institutions - that gives them unchecked power to destroy the country.

For example: the current societal problem of not doing enough against climate change would disappear if we developed cheap fusion power and/or very cheap grid-scale batteries that would remove the intermittency issue from renewables. Such power sources would quickly replace fossil fuels simply due to better economics, no need to change society to care about climate change anymore.

May I interest you in Jevon's paradox: if a thing becomes cheaper or more efficient, usage tends to go up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons_paradox

How will increased energy use from *carbon-neutral sources* cause climate change?

None of which would have happened if we had not gotten so complacent about defending our democracy through vigorous enforcement of the Constitution, and voting in a fashion more informed by wisdom than emotion.

At the root of all you lament is not lack of trust, it is complacency. Decades long complacency.

Lack of trust is what our republic was founded on, and the entire reason it was structured the way it was. Our republic is specifically designed to function in a trust-free environment.

But no republic, nor any other organizational construct, no matter how well designed, will survive complacency.
