That would be quite a play. Stripe, PayPal, Venmo, Braintree, Xoom all under one umbrella. The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) for online card-not-present (CNP) checkout on that is going to be absurdly high and this will take a lot of convincing to beat antitrust. They will probably have to unwind Venmo and Braintree.

With all these new banking methods, also "Hero" more recently, I really don't know where this new "Numerical Euro" stuff from the ECB is going

For better or worse, PayPal is the only service that works for my business, and it has worked flawlessly for upwards of 2 decades. I casually look for alternatives to PP once every couple of years. My business ships a physical product, and has a completely passive web page. It's about as bland as boring as it gets. My page has a "buy" button with a link to PayPal. Then you complete your transaction within PP's site.…

I can never seem to find this API when I look for it. What's the feature you're using called? Thanks in advance.

It's something like "My Buttons." You create buttons within PP, and it gives you a chunk of HTML that you paste into your web page.

Payment Orchestrators help solve this problem. source: I work at https://primer.io

FYI - I tried visiting your site. In Chrome (tested in Incognito as well), I get a massive white space at the top, with a vertical scroll. If I scroll far enough, I see the site. Worked fine in Firefox.

very strange - Ill pass it on to the team managing the landing page.

I tried reproducing and was unable to, both in chrome and safari.

Thanks for the heads up!

The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index is a measure of the concentration of a market based on the market-share of the firms participating in it. Very much like the Simpson's index that tells you the probability of two organisms in a place being of the same type when randomly drawn. It's just \sum_i^n h_{i}^2 sum of squares of market-share. Enjoyed that. Thanks for the discovery.

HHI and Simpsons are neat new finds.

There's also this other variant of the Simpson's Index: https://www.thesimpsonsindex.com/

It was still non-zero amount of evidence and that’s exactly what was being asked for.

Evidence of a process being used is not evidence of bribes in a process. A thing happens in every administration regime where once it becomes clear that X is acceptable (e.g. renewables projects, LBOs, nuclear, oil drilling, etc), there will be a lot of submissions to do X without any bribes at all.

Fair.

I’ll toss in some better evidence then: the Paramount lawsuit settlement that paves the way for the merger, which includes future payments for things like pro-Trump advertisements/PSAs:

https://www.foxnews.com/media/how-trump-sued-cbs-won-60-minu...

Paramount shareholders are suing over this and accusing the administration of bribery.

https://www.mediaite.com/media/news/paramount-shareholders-a...

Here’s another giant unrelated article that details the Trump administration’s shakedown system:

https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/unco...

I’ll remind everyone that it has been well established fact that Trump was basically the real estate guy for the Russian mafia in NYC before he got into politics. It isn’t some kind of strange coincidence that a lot of what he does feels mafia-like.

The future is direct payments without middlemen. So consolidation of these legacy players is not unexpected - their revenue whilst sizeable is going to continually decrease every year as people use cards less (Many countries have/are rolling out their domestic app2app or bank2retailer payment system).

This makes stripe more valuable. No company on the web wants to manage dozens of local payment methods with slightly different rules and possible local bank account requirements.

Stripe is a much stronger company when they're able to aggregate a large number of small payment networks rather than just relying on Visa/MC.

As a consumer what is the incentive to not use a card? In North America, at least, there are points programs that heavily incentivize my usage of credit cards plus other benefits like travel insurance. I also trust in the consumer protections that the major credit cards offer. I'm seeing more and more 3% credit card surcharges lately. While frustrating, at least they're transparent so I'd expect them to cancel that upcharge.

Which is funny because regardless of whether or not those states succeed in blocking the merger, those legacy video entertainment businesses will become irrelevant whether they are one business or two, due to the fierce competition from TikTok/Instagram/Reddit/Youtube/Whatsapp/computers/anything on the internet in general. It's probably the most inconsequential merger, from a consumer standpoint.

Anything can be a monopoly or not, depending on how you define the market.

But not anything is worth litigating. The kids with a lemonade stand on the corner in my neighborhood have a monopoly on that corner.

Video media sellers are dime a dozen these days, and the barrier to entry for selling video media is basically none. Warner brothers and paramount are nowhere near the only business to buy and watch media, and it affects almost no buyers negatively if they merge.

Shouldn't you think that about every way companies save money? And yet they do compete on price.
