Hey! I'm pretty sure I stayed at your apartment around 2003 with shock and ript when we were travelling around Europe going to demo parties!

You went by that g nickname back then right? Remedy 2003 in that cramped student apartment.

Yeah I’m pretty sure I was using bananaboy back then! That’s right Remedy, I was trying to remember what the demo party we went to was. That was a lot of fun, I have fond memories of that trip!

Former FastTracker II [1] user reporting in. The Gravis Ultrasound had an incredible price to performance ratio back in the day and made high quality wavetable synthesis at "CD quality" available to the masses. 1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FastTracker_2 Edit: The fact that quite a few games supported the GUS out of the box or received patches to do so was also a well received boon on my side.

This is how I heard about it. I never had access to anything like that. The idea that you could load samples on to it was out of my reach. All I could do was midi programming on my Yamaha XG50. But it never sounded professional. Then I discovered the world of music trackers and that carried me until fruity loops came along.

I was a Gravis Ultrasound Max owner just for Second Reality. That was Art.

Second Reality was art indeed, but the GUS didn't make all that much difference for it. The soundtrack didn't have higher rate samples for the GUS's memory to hold or more channels for it to mix. Later demos and games did use these capabilities, but for Second Reality, the GUS sounded just about the same as a 16-bit Sound Blaster.

My GUS replaced an 8 bit sound card. The difference in 2nd Reality was night and day!

On a system of that era, some scenes look far smoother with the GUS than SB16. With the GUS running, the CPU could focus on graphics because the audio was offloaded to the GUS. This was particularly true of the 3d flight scene.

Ah sorry for being coy, the G was meant to be a shorthand for gyr or am I misremembering?

Ohhh gotcha! Gyr was another scener from Queensland. I don’t think he was with us on that trip. I think it was just me (Sam - bananaboy), shock (Raj), and ript (Dave)
