Which ethics are you talking about?
It would be interesting to know what Cerf, Thompson, etc. saw in Google. Why was it more appealing than, for example, academia
The ethics question might be something like: Is advertising really the highest and best use for a public computer network; does it justify using the network for data collection and mass surveillance
But yeah, just an awesome guy all around. One of the few people I consider to be a source of inspiration for me.

That is not a claim that he “created the Internet”. He, of anybody, knows that sponsoring legislation to enable the creation of a thing is not synonymous with personally creating the thing.
If he got anything wrong it was to be clumsy with words in a live interview. Who among us has not occasionally been clumsy with words in live conversation? That doesn’t license people to keep insisting we said a thing we didn’t actually say.

I worked on the ARPANET project under Steve Crocker at UCLA and met his bud Vint there (with his ever-present 3 piece suit, briefcase, and hearing aids) ... what a great guy. Sounds like he was frustrated he lost and thought the program was a lot more clever than it was. :)
And he was disappointed in me or the program or the nature of reality that the play algorithm was so simple and dumb ... but it was a slow machine with limited memory, and doing better is actually quite hard and I hadn't invested the time to do so.

I characterize it as fulminating due to the use of capitalization (which is specifically against the guidelines), along with an overall belligerent tone.
It’s just not a cutthroat enough topic to get too insistent about. We can discuss these things in a conversational style, which is what HN is meant to be for.

That’s great and we sincerely appreciate you sharing your personal insights here. We just really want HN to be a place for curious conversation rather than belligerence, which is how your first reply came across. I can understand it may not have seemed that way to you when you wrote it and I’m sorry if there’s been a misunderstanding.
