I rented a Volkswagen a few months ago and yep, that checks out. Also it was the first time in my life I had to search online how to reset a car entertainment system, because the screen suddenly didn’t work anymore. A friend of mine bought a new VW a few years ago. He was so excited about that app it came with alerting him about unlocked doors, open trunk, open window, etc. Well, 100% false alert rate.

I wouldn't say the alert rate is 100%.

Many of the the alerts are technically accurate but do you really need an alert on your phone that your door is open as you're getting in/out of the car?

I am aware of a recent youtube video where some guy measured the CO2 ppm scores with recirculation on. The results are (obviously) quite terrible after a while.

But I don't think car manufacturers care about that. I think the switch to fresh air after a while is mainly to prevent the windshield from fogging up.

You can deactivate it, but has to be on every car start. It's so annoying having to tur off all that crap every single trip. Sometimes i forget the lane assist ON and get nudged randomly at high speeds, so so scary.

Maybe you'll be able to buy a box to plug into the CAN bus and simulate pressing the button to deactivate it. Sorta like the auto-stop eliminator for that horrid feature (which saves less than 5 gallons of gas per year in my dad's Subaru - thankfully mine is one year too old for that).

So we're just back to the button pusher era again?

My apologies, then, I misunderstood your point.

That said, I still think it's a generally good feature. If a person is distracted and fails to see the vehicle in their blind spot during their inital shoulder check, that beep might prevent an accident.

On my vehicle that warning can be disabled, which I think is the right way to provide features like this. People who find it useful can leave it on and people who find it distracting can turn it off.

What exactly are you arguing for? Changes to the driving test to detect how someone reacts to distractions?

In NZ we have to identify hazards. Distractions would be interesting. "Send a text to someone and include that obscure emoji". Or perhaps more vogue - go thru EV charging app registration including verifying your email address and entering credit card details, while driving.

We also have hazard perception in the uk. Maybe they should have TikTok open at the side during it. Or make the test last an hour and “allow” use of your phone during it

i don't own a car but i have read through most of a car manual at some point, it had many useful detail on maintenance and configuration

if the parent commenter read the manual, they would know what the beeping means

Which is also absurd because other automakers have other less annoying options. I had Hondas that just vented outside air just to the defroster vents without disabling the re-circulator. The Tesla Model 3 can send heated or AC chilled air to the defroster by tapping the defroster button to cycle options.
