Re: Resetting Xbox

My son setup Gamepass a few years ago. It was the biggest rip off I've ever seen. So many things about Microsoft are out of kilter. I'm about to migrate my daughter away from a 3 year old Lenovo Yoga to a Macbook Air M5 - it's just too hard to administer, its now sluggish and the AI is completely in the way. She doesn't need it, and despite a few business practices of Apple I don't really like if I have to choose bet…

Why not linux?

The hardware, software maturity (I’m looking at Gnome here), and lack of wanting tinker with the core OS and wanting to use an M5.

FWIW, in terms of software maturity - I think some might find that funny as I contribute to LibreOffice code :-)

I think they changed it not long ago so you can play free to play games without the online subscription. Just like on PlayStation network. But paid online games you need to be subbed yes.

Which is real dumb when in like self hosting a Minecraft server. Pay to play online has turned me off Xbox, I won’t buy next gen

Yeah, I forgot to mention that the pay-to-play even applies to multiplayer within your own LAN. I just verified that nothing had changed since I last played: you are unable to join LAN games unless you buy a monthly xbox pass. Complete BS.

So not games.

Try reading between the lines. Why would Valve be developing a new game physics engine internally?

Valve switched existing games to Rubikon to avoid paying licensing fees for their former physics engine.

What does this mean exactly? Because Mature games are designed to appeal to 14 year old boys. Are you referring to some kind of David Lynch of gaming?

Yeah, I don't mean "mature" in the sense of the rating system, which does in fact mean "made for 14-year-old boys." I don't like or understand David Lynch, but you get what I'm trying to say. There is no one in the video game landscape doing something similar to what Welles or Kurosawa did in cinema, or what Yorgos Lanthimos and Ari Aster are doing now (or Matt Reeves and Guillermo del Toro, if you're not into arthou…

I feel like these games exist- they just aren't popular, or are typically subpar in one way or another. The problem is that I feel like video games have become like music- there is innovation happening in genres, but there are so many and have fragmented off so much that I cant really recommend to you a game I find to be genius because there's a good chance that you can't appreciate the gameplay. That's not a knock on you or anyone else as a gamer.

>150M at 5B revenue is not great: that's 3% margin! Oy vey maybe this kind of money grubbery is not good for our society.

is it somehow lost on you that you're commenting on a vc's website

HackerNews is where I find informed commentary on tech stuff because places like reddit are hollowed out and useless for it. I don't care one bit about cretins like VCs.

Yes but it's not just Rubikon anymore. They are working on a new physics engine called Ragnarok. I highly doubt they're making a whole new physics engine just for their existing games because Rubikon is working fine there.

He's referring to this list of invited guests: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/jun/24/peter-...

What does it have to do with Xbox? Should I be worried that people are holding conferences?

The new Xbox CEO was on the guest list. But yeah, I agree it's a bit like a conspiracy theory.

When XBOX fires a bunch of people and shutters studios leading to fewer games with worse support, that's a problem for consumers. I think people often forget that in a society we rely on companies making and serving things. They make our food and our medicine and build our homes and make our games. It's a good thing when their finances are healthy. It's a bad thing when they form monopolies and rent-seek.

Once again, what is the actual problem here? The company was making a profit at their current employment level. They are laying people off and shuttering studios because that profit isn't enough for them. This entire argument keeps coming back to "money grubbery".

> Once again, what is the actual problem here?

I told you very plainly: fewer games with worse support.

How is making more and more every fiscal year "healthy"? This is madness and it doesn't make any sense besides the one case where you pursue a monopoly. All of this has nothing to do with the consumer of the product besides the fact that he'll get a worse and worse product while simultaneously being forced to pay more and more. Enshitification is aresult of this "healthy" business culture.

> How is making more and more every fiscal year "healthy"?

Because if they didn't make a return on their investment, they would invest their money elsewhere. When you have money you want a return. You can invest it into games, or cars, or phones, or mining, or healthcare. Whatever you invest it in, you want to be justified for your risk because you can lose money. Sometimes you can lose all of it. If you're really risk averse you just put it all into a bank account on low interest. A lot of European investors do this, which is why their technological innovations are falling well behind the US.

If you want more games with better support, we all benefit if they're making a profit on their investments.
