Bold of you to think individuals are a big part of their marketshare and explosive growth. My company introduced enterprise last month and the bill was US$110k for a few dozen folks using it Claude Code and Design. Do the Pro and Max plans help with word of mouth and whatnot? Sure, but the individual with a Max plan (or 4...) are all subsidized by the big spenders

I hate that you're right, but you're right. Twitter and HN can scream and yell as loud as they want but the fact is, enterprises are going to use Fable via API and pay the bills. In fact, restricting individuals probably makes it MORE likely that enterprises will pony up.

That is doubtful.

Many enterprises still yap about "choosing the right model for the task" and Sonnet, as if it would magically become better by holding it differently.

To make engineers ask for Fable at work, you first need to give them a taste of what it can do at home.

What better than greenfield side projects, unconstrained by the overhead at work?

It is great to also receive the promotion, but then you are in Europe and are banned from using "dangerous" AI by the US :)

Yes, a shame the EU didn't have the courage to ban this surveillance system themselves now that its clearly hooked straight into room 641A.

This makes sense to me. Consider these assumptions: 1) During peak times, they're already struggling to meet demand. They've figured out that 50% should be achievable without causing too much pain for existing users, and by setting a limit, more users will use it for architecture and then switch back to Opus 4.8 for implementation. 2) They need data on how people are using it at scale to figure out when it should fir…

I have been positively surprised by the current usage limits on the Max 5x plan. I think it might even be suitable for full time work, if the $200 plan gives four times the usage. Particularly if they also remove the halving in the future. I am not holding my breath for them adding an even more subsidized subscription tier.

Don't assume the current subscription tiers are subsidized. We don't know, and it's entirely possible that even the $200 a month plan is not. Remember that Anthropic makes improvements to their models to use fewer tokens all the time, and we don't know how much they pass that on to us. "Usage" is not one-to-one with tokens, either.

I went last to first, and I was not blocked.

Thanks for trying and for sharing results here. This is a pretty interesting data point and suggests something I don't think I've read about: the possibility that safeguards may not be account-invariant; that two different users might be getting downgraded or blocked differently for the same prompts. This raises some really interesting ethical questions in my mind, but I suppose I need to do more reading and research…

You bet! It's interesting.

As someone who has worked in the space on multiple products, I can tell you with 99.999% certainty that fraud/abuse detection is never account invariant once money is involved.

Eh, I have yet to get safety-switched from Fable to Opus. Your mileage may vary.

Whether it happens to 5% or 50% (or even 0.5%) of users, I think everyone should feel extremely cynical when a company offers a huge freebie of a product ... and fails to mention that any % of their customers will actually get yesterday's model.

I mean for many of us this doesn’t even increase the cynicism. Ie it can’t get worse. These AI labs are already believed to be shifting behavior of these models at runtime so you never really know what you’re getting. Stability is not a thing with any provider, if you need that you have to run it locally.

I’m not offended by that because I’m already maximally offended lol.

From the original announcement last month: > After this point-when sufficient capacity allows us to do so—we aim to restore Fable 5 as a standard part of subscription plans. We intend to do this as quickly as we can. From today: > After July 7, 2026, Claude Fable 5 is no longer included in your plan’s weekly usage limits. You can keep using Claude Fable 5 through usage credits, which let you pay for usage beyond what…

Fable can one-shot solutions. Opus 4.8 spins its wheels for a week or month and may never get there. Which one uses more resources?

Is it too cynical to read the first quote as "when openai catch up, we will restore fable 5 to subscription plans"? In other words, they're saying "We know have a monopoloy and we will take all of your money until someone offers a cheaper competing product"? And "We intend to do this as quickly as we can" read as a non-promise then as much as it does now? --- Well, I am assuming that this is all based on the fact tha…

What you say make total sense.

When you build something people REALLY want, you can pull of ridiculous stunts like Claude's pricing: - Vague limits - Weekly/monthly usage stats ?? - 50% of your usage on Fable 5 - $200/mo subscription that doesn't include Fable 5 - But you can use it with "usage credits"

Late to this post, but my impression was that later models would be more efficient per task? Wouldn't they save compute released fable 5, maybe capping the effort, if it is actually a better model?

I bet my house that after the promotional stuff ends they will change their mind and let you keep using Fable on subscription. Otherwise this is the end of their marketshare. These guys are complete idiots. I give them that

Well, it looks like I was right. The whole thing is just Anthropic hype strategy. TBH to me they look like idiots now after the Fable fiasco but they keep playing the same note. Hopefully they will finally be regulated for good.
