I'm Gen Z and I buy DVDs (though mostly second hand). You're probably right on the whole, though I've only observed the opposite.

Why DVD and not Blu-ray? The reason I said boomers buy DVD is because there are still a lot of senior citizens that are not internet savvy that like to rent out movies from their libraries, the dvds are simpler to operate, are more reliable from deep scratches, and a lot of boomers have simple equipment. Most of them don't care about perceived quality. This market is big enough that ironically DVDs may actually outli…

They're often cheaper and not everything is on Blu-ray. If Blu-ray was going really strong and overtook DVDs, I'd be happy about it. I don't really think DVDs are "simpler to operate" except for the fact that you only need cheaper equipment (though one can imagine someone with ingrained habits believing them to be "complicated").

It's amazing how many people throw around the word monopoly without remotely understanding what it means.

They were using the word correctly, "monopoly" doesn't only mean greatly dominant player in an open market. Current consoles are by definition vertical monopolies.

I think we should encourage this framing of "monopoly" more.

You can be a tiny company and still be a monopoly. If you're the only grocery store in a (walkable) town where many elderly people don't own a car, you're a monopoly. If you're the only company allowed to sell beer at a football game (that doesn't allow fans to bring liquids into the stadium), you're a monopoly. If you're a school cantine, and school rules forbid students from walking out during the school day, you're also a monopoly.

By politicizing games, ruining them with their agenda, and in a hundred other ways.

Which games specifically were ruined? How were they ruined? Can you provide a single example and explain how it is woke and why it ruins the game?

Concord, the single largest failure by a game company (and really, most other companies too, except maybe movie studios lately). Wasn't that the backlash?

> $600 could get you a beast of a machine Where can you get a new gaming "beast of a machine" for $600? In the past you could build a reasonable gaming machine for $600 but parts are drastically more expensive today. If you go to microcenter and look for gaming PCs, their cheapest option is $800 [1]. PC Part Picker's entry level build is $780 [2]. The only option I found with these constraints is this computer from W…

In the past you could build a reasonable one for $200-$300. When "we" were growing up - consoles used to offer huge performance at a tremendous discount. For instance the video card in the original XBox was worth significantly more than the entire system's retail cost. But that era ended at the PS4. Consoles since then are sold with midrange hardware, derivative of typical retail hardware, sold for or near profit on…

I linked both prebuilt and do it yourself builds. Neither resulted in a comparable machine to the PS5 for $600.

Again, I think you are missing how much the price of components has increased.

16GB of DDR5 alone costs approximately $200 [1]. I challenge you to find a new case, motherboard, NVMe SSD, and PSU for the remaining $100 in the budget after $200 for ram and after your assumed $300 for a GPU.

Steam has been (mostly) a good citizen. But there's not much in the way of legal or technical hurdles to them going down the same path. It's all goodwill and reputation. I hope it's enough.

You can at least make local backups of your Steam games. If a game is removed such that you can't even download it anymore, you can always just install it manually.

Steam has DRM,so no. Easily cracked yes, but then you can just go the full pirate route.

You've illustrated exactly why Sony is getting rid of physical media. Money.

But that's not how the numbers work. I bought a PS5 (instead of gaming on Steam or Xbox) because I could buy physical discs, and I like having them. I buy digital games from time to time as well, but if the PS5 hadn't supported physical games at all, I wouldn't have bought one in the first place, just as I most likely won't buy a PS6 because of this announcement.

Also, remember the marketing idea of the "Disney Vault"? In the 90s, Disney would take all their movies in and out of print basically, only selling tapes some of the time, and they'd charge top dollar for them, because you couldn't just walk into Walmart and grab a copy of "Cinderella" anytime. They created scarcity easily this way, since before ebay, finding specific things like a certain videotape at a thrift store…

> I can see this happening with games more after the death of physical media. I saw a screenshot of something like this recently with the pre-orders of GTA VI. They apparently "ran out of digital copies..." of something that doesn't exist yet.

I learned never to pre-order any game when I was still a teenager and got burned doing so. I suppose there's always new teenagers who these video game companies can do rug-pulls on

> switch line is nearly impossible Nah. Switch 1 is already compromised and I'd predict we'll see modchips for the Switch 2 in the next 3 years.

Sorry, I should've specified soft mods. iirc there's only been 1 softmod for the switch that was patched out extremely early on before we knew about it

You're partially right, only the first revision of the Switch 1 could be hacked without modchips, but those early revisions can't have a software patch as the exploit relied on a hardware bug (some design flaw in the NVIDIA Tegra SoC if I remember correctly).

Maybe AI will change that. That’s the crux, safe software is like an unbreakable lock. It can keep safe what you value or it can lock you in|out.

You lot really ought to stop with “AI will solve that” statements. It’s like watching a child play with Siri thinking it is a real person. C’mon now.

You read the "maybe"?

And the rest of my statement isn’t about AI but about secure software.
