Don't these kids believe they're protesting the destruction of the job market? Isn't that an understandable belief, given that AI company CEOs have publicly predicted they'll make it happen?

It's incredibly childish of people on this site that within minutes of you posting people are trying to downvote you for saying "don't say slurs".
NGL I can't imagine casually throwing slurs around having been acceptable on HN 1, 2, or even 5 years ago yet here we are.

I'm not too surprised the younger generation has a healthy distaste for AI. AI represents a lot of negatives in the world today, which is kind of the icing on the shit pie for the young. They were already facing a pretty uphill battle ahead of them, then ChatGPT shit all over any hopes they really had. It is gutting the entry level positions already (or at least is being used as the scapegoat for this behavior by Execs). It is poised to collapse entire industries. It is already starting to speed up the further enriching the rich and enpooring the poor
Be really honest: if you were to go back to who you were as an 18 year old, with all of your hopes and dreams ahead, would you be looking at AI positively?
I would probably have given up.

The issue is what the tool is being used for. The article mentions and has a picture of a bus stop ad that literally reads "Stop Hiring Humans - The Era of AI Employees is Here."
If you don't think that kind of behavior, by people with major control over the economy, is worth protesting, that gratuitous slur you used is about the kindest word I can think of for you.
And while we're throwing insults around, the greedy narcissistic oligarchs, and their wannabe followers, who exhibit that behavior are only demonstrating that they're also pretty much empty between the ears - all they see is dollar signs and all they want is more of them. They don't seem capable of self-reflection, or any of the other more admirable human traits.
If there ever was a group that no-one will shed a tear for when the next revolution comes, they are it. They all worry about how they're going to protect themselves against an uncertain future - bunkers in New Zealand and that sort of thing - but none of them seem to have considered the idea of actually being pro-social good citizens of the society that grants them their wealth and power.
If anyone needs their taste of boot polish for the day, go ahead and disagree.

It’s not collapsing anything, rather its calling into question the true value of all economic activities.
Which is actually healthy.
The real question is - should society have jobs for the sake of jobs? Or should society go all in on finding the optimal mix of inputs for production? Why not go a step further - what’s the optimal mix of businesses in the economy? Do we really need as many as all that exists?
Frankly software firms have been able to get away with being insanely bloated because of the very favourable economics of the business.

some companies are marketing themselves as AI despite barely using AI and customers demanding AI and with a belief it's superior to anything else.
While i see the articles where they say average person hates AI?
which one is true?
