I learned music production by first learning how to produce house. Because of this, I can confidently say that house is not music. You literally just copy/paste over and over. Just because a human makes something, doesn't make it good or "music" necessarily.

I went to see an orchestra performance. They literally just only made sound by dragging their bows across the strings on their "instruments". I can confidently say that is not music.

and it's so low effort too. like they never try dragging their instruments across the bows. where has all the creativity gone now that we have these "official protocols" of performance and musical quality!

I'm not saying it doesn't exist at all, I'm saying electronic music is significantly harder for AI to do than a conventional love ballad or a rock song. AI can't do "robotic" math music, it's best at sappy generic emotive stuff. (I guess this isn't at all a surprise for those that know how the musical sausage is made.)

I'd love to see AI take a stab at a Meshuggah or Dillinger Escape Plan clone.

not exactly what you're aiming at with your comment but, sort of adjacent, maybe relevant:

Consumption vs. Appreciation in a single pair of comments, what a beautiful dichotomy of the human experience of art.

It's not a dichotomy anymore. With AI tools I can make for myself. I was already a creative before AI, but now I have a lot more control in more domains than I could express myself in before.

You clearly stated in your post that nothing matters except how it makes your brain feel. That wasn’t vague, don’t try to walk it back - own it.

AI music != electronic music. Most AI music is actually country-pop ballads and indie folk. Making electronic music with AI is hard and it isn't very good at it.

YouTube is already recommending tons of AI-generated electronic music. It's pretty easy to spot: It will have millions of views and the "artist's" discography will only go back to 2025 or 2026. It's usually just singles. The cover art is vague atmospheric AI-generated. The "artist" will have no presence online save for a couple instagram account with a couple posts that are also AI-generated.

I occasionally listen to Drum n Bass & House music on YouTube. Just a few years ago a number of compilations, artists and playlists were made with the tagging of "PS2 Ambiance" or "PS2 D&B to Relax to", etc.

Most of these were either:

1. Legitimate music from the PS2 era games. 2. Music which could of easily been included in the games of the era.

I constantly see "PS2 Jungle Mix" and its AI, or entirely by one guy (which I assume is AI?).

This type of music is my background music whilst playing a game, or just chilling because it has no lyrics to be distracted by. It doesn't really matter all that much if its AI or not, but I still find myself filtering by uploads from a few years ago to avoid the slop.

No. I don’t think it’s at all okay or fair that the wealthiest man in the world can push great replacement conspiracies and endorse the murder of immigrants (non-white South African division).

why should he alone be excluded from being able to use the media outlet he owns to promote his agenda? everyone else is doing it.

Tools are things that you 100 percent control based on nothing but your own skill. Oracles are things that give you free stuff if you've been a good boy and respected the oracle's rituals.

So if I sample a guitar because I don't know how to play the guitar, is the tool I used to sample it "an oracle"?

I think samplers are still clearly tools. You are still as a human performing with the sampler or at the very least manually arranging with it. If you gave somebody else the same sample, they would produce a different result.

Whereas AI (if we ignore RNG for a moment) will produce the same output from the same prompt. It's not a tool, it's a magic box that spits out a finished product with no human effort outside of the prompt.

The real reason is not that people can make money off it, it's that actual people are listening to it. Let them do, if they like to listen, whom are you to say their tastes are bad ? > 97% of people can’t tell the difference between fully AI-generated and human made music https://newsroom-deezer.com/2025/11/deezer-ipsos-survey-ai-m...

Why would I pay 10 dollars per month for music I can AI-generate myself for free?

That's right. Why would you?

Other people seem to be fine with it. Why wouldn't they?

That would be illegal in Australia, even if the policy was prominently displayed up front. Claiming otherwise is to treat each book as a packet of Pokémon trading cards, where you know you’re getting some cards, but you don’t get to choose which ones.

Much, much more difficult to enforce / obtain remedy, but it’s also against the law in the USA as well.

In the USA you could possibly just contact your credit card company and have them issue a chargeback. And then Kobo might just let it go because it costs more to contest it.

A significant amount of ebook reading now is romance/erotica or fantasy (or combined "romantasy") genres by readers for whom something a decade old won't appeal. An old book could seem socially "problematic" from a 2026 lens (especially for young people for whom that is before their time), or it isn't what one's peers are reading and one wants to connect with a community of other readers online or in school/universit…

> An old book could seem socially "problematic" from a 2026 lens (especially for young people for whom that is before their time), Or, you know, you've just read the old books already because they came out 10 years ago and that's a lot of time to read. I doubt it has anything to do with "romantasy" as a genre, anything that has people actually reading books, on a regular basis (as opposed to the people who mean readi…

Actually effective, human-powered recommendation systems already exist, and they’re great.

My favorite implementation of this is talking to the clerks at my neighborhood bookstore. But the New York Review of Books is an alternative that’s easier to enjoy from home. For romance novels I like the blog Smart Bitches Trashy Books. Also this is kind of cheating but I have a family member who reviews books for a library journal so a lot of the time I just let her tell me what to read.

The world is getting more confusing. My wife is 500+ episodes deep in Spotify's AI podcasts and doesn't believe me when I tell her these are neither human voices nor human texts. I can tell by a hundred small tells, but somehow she can't or doesn't want to. I'm sure in five years I will not be able to tell the difference either.

So it becomes profitable to just pump out slop, give it hundreds of variations, and hope some of them rack up >1000 listens to pay out under Spotify's model, which just rewards quantity.

I can't see how tidal can enforce it's quality policy. Who will review and apply it? And even those that pass will be cheap and plentiful to produce. On the other hand I guess they have told themselves that if people can't tell the difference then it doesn't matter - better to be on the bandwagon and unhappy than to be run over by the wagon all others are on. Just basic game theory - everyone blinks and everyone is worse off.

But I'm convinced wthout a change in approach by the main providers, basically audio entertainment and the podcaster and independent musician models (unless they can live off concerts) are dead.
