BAR is amazing but there's a hurdle for new players. If you download it, don't join the first lobby you see. My advice is to watch some videos on youtube, play some games solo, then look for new player lobbies or create your own and set restrictions on it. It only takes one player on the enemy team who regularly plays the game and you'll get stream rolled. Or you'll join a game of regular players, can't hold your lan…

This is very important advice if you want to have a good time playing the game. Picking the right lobby is changes your experience drastically.

this. also realize its a complex game with a legit learning curve. you literally cant just drop in to pvp and expect to have fun.

and also at least in lobbies with noob in the name its pretty rare for people to be actively hostile to the low os ppl who at least know the basics. but you do have to remember that in the middle of a match nobody has time to type and tell you what to do politely.(its an apm heavy game). try to assume good intent, its not ppl being rude usually.

I'm not sure what are you trying to prove and refute in your post really. The OP - which you're replying to - is saying that they're not having fun playing RTSes like that (which I understand - sounds awfully limited). You're just trying to prove them they're wrong for not having fun or something. What was your goal with this post, really?

aetherspawn is playing in a complex 8v8 team game. They don't want to play and don't enjoy 6 out of the 8 roles/positions on each team. Unless you're the highest score player in the lobby you don't get to reserve a role. And the back line roles are pretty crucial and can lose the game for the team. They're not going to have a good time in anything that isn't a very noob or a vs AI lobby with the way they currently un…

I don’t mind playing 2nd from front. On a lot of maps this leaves 6/8 roles that I like. On others, it leaves 4/8 roles.

If people really liked playing those roles, why am I always forced to play them? Shouldn’t everyone else be jumping to grab them? Lol

You occasionally get smurfs in Rocket League but it's like 1 in 10 games so not a big issue IMO.

this is completely ignoring the botting issue that was so bad lately it pushed pros out of ssl and severely messed up MMR. this season is the first one that is remotely playable in a while

Oh yeah to be fair I stopped playing for that whole period (not because of it).

Hey, PtaQ here, BAR’s Community Manager. I’m sorry this was your experience. There are definitely some very competitive lobbies, but harassment is not acceptable. Please report any players involved, as reports are the only way we can identify patterns and take action. We have an active moderation team and do review them. For a more relaxed experience, I’d recommend trying less established meta maps. Lobbies marked “r…

Hey PtaQ, I appreciate the comment and that BAR is putting effort into improving the community, but I raised a pull request to edit the community code of conduct to clarify that players shouldn’t be banned simply for allowing a game to run its natural course, and virtually every dev disagreed with me and favoured the idea of kick banning a player who won’t surrender immediately after front is lost because “the game i…

I can appreciate this sentiment. I am someone who favors a resign vote over a let it play in 8v8, and when i was thinking about why i think its that in a lobby based system like bar, where there are few games I value staying in a lobby rather than skipping around. Thus when a game feels lost to me, id rather play a new game (even to another loss) with a good lobby then play a slow inevitable losing struggle, or worse yet watch someone else play a losing struggle (even if they enjoy playing that loss out).

Something im trying to lean into in my games is to ask the players who are voting no what their win condition or what they think they can make a go of is.

I think what ive said above could make me sound like one of the folks who "want the tightest possible loop to winning and restarting", so to add some nuance there, I think playing a game where the conclusion is foregone lacks agency, and in a game where one team eventually loses of course there is a blurry area where the team agrees that they are in fact never going to win, and then another question on whether they lie to play regardless. Because of the variation there, i like the vote, and i am in favor of coms around why someone wants to resign or stay.

I actually think it is up to players in an open loby system to communicate their intentions and reasons, and while it is true that it means people who spam coms trying to push folks around are possible, i would echo ptaqs sentiment to use that report function! and on a softer level, i really like the mute. if someone is too much, mute them and continue to enjoy your game.

Great game, technically impressive, but the community can be quite mean and toxic. I played for around a year after having played other TA Spring RTS for a few years prior, and if you don’t follow the exact meta of the month (whatever that might be) in terms of build order and things, people can get really aggro and your team can vote to kick you and take your units. Also, one particularly aggravating part of the com…

Yeah the meta tracking does seem quite aggressive. Having everyone’s ranking so visible also doesn’t help imo

The frontline & surrender thing seems a bit more reasonable though. Chances of eco players turning around a broken front are basically nil

Yeah it's very sad for me as well, I was a big fan of supreme commander and I really wanted to play BAR. They have a special Notice for Mac users, which explain that they don't support Mac because: 1. No support for OpenGL 4.3 by Apple. 2. Dependency on a library not supporting ARM architectures. The first point is not a big deal, you can emit Vulkan commands from OpenGL via Zink, and then use MoltenVK to translate i…

There is an interesting technical reason why its a challenge (and they can't just swap in a supported library): > What makes the “simulate inputs” approach work is that the engine takes utmost care to keep calculations identical on each client. This is not trivial because you still have to work with things that naturally differ on each client, such as mouse position or which units are selected - this is called the un…

I think M:tG was ruined by this too. Back in the day, you could try out new things and play 10-20 turn games where both sides had winning chances. The odds that your opponent had anything approaching an optimal meta was zero. Now, especially online (Arena), you’re just going to get curb stomped if you aren’t playing one of the few optimal metas. And since the games hinge upon either side getting an unstoppable engine…

I’ve had the same experience getting into MTGA recently. If you don’t play the meta its very unlikely you’ll win the higher ranked you become. But this must be the case for all competitive games right? At some point the meta has been figured out and there is no real way to deviate from that.

> But this must be the case for all competitive games right? At some point the meta has been figured out and there is no real way to deviate from that.

I think this is only true about games with too few variables (not really the case for MTG), or games where too many variables can be controlled (which various MTG formats suffer from).

Historically this has not been that big a deal for the RTS genre specifically. If you look at a game like SC2, the skillfloor to actually execute the meta builds is so high that player with good fundamentals can win with a suboptimal build, versus a player with a fully meta build executed imperfectly. Plus there are almost always cheese builds that only work if the opponent doesn't expect them - not a reliable source of wins, but sometimes all it takes to clutch a tournament series

Yes if people don't want to play they can just do a resign vote, majority wins. No need to kick ban anyone.

It's amazing the degree to which streaming/online communities around video games have destroyed the games themselves. Every update to every game launches a large scale effort to find the "meta" which is then instantly disseminated to the most try-hard assholes on the Internet. Anyone who dares to develop their own strategy/style/loadout is up against hordes of people (a growing proportion every day) who just copy wha…

Seems people in general have started to project their lifes disappointments, stresses, and greater human needs onto a digital dimension like video games. Growing up they used to be about fun. I have endless memories as a child playing Mario N64 and it not needing to be about playing a particular way; only as a I got older and competition and disappointments being human as an adult added up did I notice this shift you…

It depends on the perspectives. Some people play to achieve things, to progress, not meander around doing things that they've done before and getting the same results.

You blame gaming as a scapegoat and escape from real life. I'd like to differ. The reward-effort-sense of a regular job is getting worse and worse over time. Take a job for example - you take guides and classes and interviews worth an examination only to do low level stuff. Then you find out the humans governing you are incredibly flaky on their promises. It's just not as satisfying compared to finding a guide and getting your worth out of it.

Matchmaking is a real problem in most games because of smurfing.

You occasionally get smurfs in Rocket League but it's like 1 in 10 games so not a big issue IMO.

That varies VASTLY depending on what skill you're at. At D3 where I am, I'd say maybe 2 out of 3 games have at least one person showing banners or skins that are exclusive to Grand Champ tournament winners.
